Each game takes place in the same conteninent, but each game is a different section of it. Like Skyrim is in the north in the mountains, Oblivion is in the center where it is more civilized, and I forget where Morrowind is located.
Edit: The combat in TES games are different, since they are very clunky, but I find them satisfying. The game doesn't shine because of the combat, it shines for everything else it does right. There is nothing like searching through one of the hundres of caves/dungeons for a few hours and finally finding the secret it is holding.
The first dungeon I explored (Bleak Fall Barrows) was just jaw droppingly good. Wow that was amazing. I was there because of a sidequest (a shopkeeper in Riverside wanted his gold claw back) and then I just kept going further and further into the cave after getting it and ended up getting the first should in the game earlier than I was supposed to. Then I decided to start the main quest again so I could use the shout (no dragons until you fight the first story one, sorry for spoilers), and then the court mage wants me to go back and find what I found in Black Fall Barrows...but then I just whipped it out and the dialogue said "Oh, you mean this?"
That was easy.
