It depends on your play style, Soup. If you don't plan on getting hit then upgrading your armor really isn't necessary. What upgrading your armor does is it upgrades your physical defense. The higher the physical defense the less health you'll lose on successful hits... it also has an affect on the amount of stamina lost on hits as well. Upgrading your shield is really important in my opinion as the more you upgrade it the more stability it adds. The attack stat that upgrades with it is garbage in my opinion... unless you use shield bash which I never have. The only thing I care about is shield stability. The higher the stability the less stamina/endurance you lose on each successful block with your shield. So if you plan to block alot upgrade your shield.
Also, the best way to get the materials is to farm...of course. But if you know a few tricks it helps you. For instance. The slugs down in blighttown is great for farming for a couple reasons. First of all you get large titanite there. But when a slug drops a green titanite it drops them 5 at a time. Green titanite can be fed to Frampt. Each green titanite gives you 5 titanite shards. So for each green titanite drop from a slug it equals 25 titanite shards if you feed them to Frampt.
Also, the Dark Wraiths. You can farm them for Titanite chunks and the occasional titanite slab. Which is great...but if you feed a Titanite Chunk to Frampt he'll give you 3 large titanite in return.
