You're gonna have the Drake as a crutch. I was ignoring weapons and not looking at ones that scale with stats. If you go to the graveyard by Firelink Shrine, you can find a winged spear that you should consider until you get an Iaito or find the lightning spear in Sen's Fortress. How far are you and what bosses have you beaten?

Beat everything on my way except the Dragon (minus his tail).

Cut off the tail of the first bell gargoyle. You get a good axe.
The next boss isn't hard, but very very annoying until you luck out or someone mentions what to do. Btw, have you been killing black knights or the big guy on the bottom of the tower before Taurus?
The big guy, Havel, drops an AMAZING ring. Increass equip load by 50%.

Do you mean the Black Knight with it's back to you at the end of the long alley? If so I beat him and got his shield and there was a corpse at the end of the alley with a ring that increases DEF when your HP is low.

There was one above the tower after the rats. He can drop a black knight spear which rocks.
That ring is meh imo, but that was the only one until 10 hours in.
Do you not like it as much as Demon's Soul because you find it easier?
