This time, after the first time I attacked it from the ledge I just stayed relatively close and chucked fireballs at it whenever it swung at me. He has a fairly long wind up, so it's easy to spot an attack coming, and his recovery time allows you to throw a fireball or come in for a few strikes with time to spare. I don't think I even had to block anything.
Had a go at fighting Havel. I was doing pretty well until he connected with one big hammer smash and completely totalled me then and there. I thought I had my shield up, but he must've just broken through my guard and that was that. I'll try it again later, because patience, dodging and continually chipping away seems like it'll do the trick.
Also tried getting across the bridge with the big red dragon at the opposite side, but I've failed miserably at that a couple times now.

At least you have a gameplan. First two boss fights I've went in with a plan then sort of resorted to 'O SHIT O SHIT O SHIT *slash slash slash slash*'.
I think I'm paying the price from basically spamming magic in Demon's Souls. I wouldn't even think of facing Havel currently and I'm a boss ahead of you.

Man, any gameplan I've had quickly turns to shit as soon as the fucker shows up. "O SHIT O SHIT O SHIT" is about right, except instead of hacking and slashing I end up running away and, like, I don't even know...hoping he falls of the bridge or something?
I think I'm gonna kill the first merchant guy, the one from the Undead Burg near the bonfire, so I can get his sword. It's a pretty badass looking Katana, and I've bought most of the shit I need from him, anyway.

Very few games match the atmosphere Dark Souls has. That feeling of loneliness and knowing that you could die at any minute. I tried playing the game yesterday with possibly the world's worst hangover and had to turn it off after about 10 mins.

Should I get this after Skyrim? Will Skyrim completely overshadow this?

Depends on your tastes really. I have yet to play Skyrim but Dark Souls is a game in which if you put enough effort in it is definitely a potential GOTY.

I just got skyrim and I think Dark Souls completely overshadowed it. I was really looking forward to Skyrim too but after getting Dark Souls and playing it for 70 hours, which I rarely ever spend on a game, it really makes Skyrim seem like a childs game. Dark Souls gameplay is just so fun and challenging it makes Skyrim just seem too easy.
Id say that playing Skyrim is like watching a movie while playing Dark Souls is like being in a movie. Just a bigger sense of Danger.

Re: Dark Souls - October 4th, 2011
I got Dark Souls after Skyrim. I like Skyrim more, mostly because I'm halfway decent at it and I'm used to Elder Scrolls games at this point (plus it's really good), but they're not really that similar at all. Maybe if you play a lot of games then you'll find them to be, I don't know, but I only played about 5 games in 2011 and Skyrim and Dark Souls don't blend together at all. I find them to be different enough that neither really overshadows the other. Skyrim has things that it does better than Dark Souls. Flip that and the same is true.
I'm enjoying this quite a bit. I haven't sat down with it and put in a good deal of time with it in one sitting like I've done with Skyrim, but that's because this is way more punishing and relentless. And I'm not very good at it.

I find Skyrim a lot more fun and engaging although DS is still a really good GOTY caliber game. How much you like DS will probably depend on how much you like to be challenged.

Re: Dark Souls - October 4th, 2011
Got the Drake Sword after pumping 30 or so arrows into that big dragon's tail. For the first time in this or Demon's Souls, I feel like I can turn an unfamiliar corner and not have to worry about having my head caved in. I don't feel like a lamb in a slaughterhouse. I mean, that Black Knight that's at the top of the spiral staircase near the big boar that's all armoured up and shit still cut me in half, but everything else, including the armoured boar, got hacked up with relatively no hassle. I mean, it's because the sword is crazy good, not because *I'm* good, but still, it's making things much easier, and I'll take whatever I can get in this game.
