In this day and age we are in the technological advances in gaming have been extraordinary. I mean we've come a long way since playing Donkey Kong at the arcade.
But is it really an improvement? Is our new era really better then the classics we all love?
Today we have extremely high graphics, online capabilities were we can play with anyone around the world. Our systems can do a lot more then just play a game. There's just so much more we can do and so much more we can experience these days.
Are the high tech advancement really better then the classics?
I mean people talk about these old games like the greatest games ever created. I mean, a simple game like the original Super Mario Brothers is considered to be much better then huge budget and extremely impressive games like GTA, Halo, and all the other high profile games out there.
What makes these classic games that are nowhere near the picture/sound quality, all the advancements and all the added things put into the game still inferior to a simply made classic?
So what I'm getting to is. Do you prefer the old classic from the 80-90's that kept us home for hours and hours having plain old fun or our new generation of gaming which makes us more interactive with you and your system and makes you more connected with people around the world?
I personally think a lot of people feel this way because it's our roots and these were the games that first got us into gaming whether if you started out with the Nes, Sega, N64, PS1 or even in Arcades. We are somewhat attached to these old games and we consider them to be amazing simply.
But perhaps you don't feel this way, do you think the current gaming era surpasses the old school?
I personally prefer old school. Maybe because it dawns from my childhood, or maybe because the games were more light-hearted and werent taken as seriously or criticized like they are nowadays.
Pretty much every genre has been explored at this point, and going back to where it all began, brings back a sense of nostalgia and originality from where games were innocent and plain old fun.

ughhh, not another one of these. You can't compare the two. Why? because they are two different eras. Both have/had their ups and downs. End of story.
Yeah, but you fail to see that this isn't a comparison thread. Obviously you can't compare them. Trying to do so would be silly to do.
It's based on preference and why someone would prefer to play a game from a certain era over another despite all the new things we've been introduced to in this century. Or play the new things and ditch the old era.
Sounds like you just read the thread title and posted.
I think that anyone that truly thinks old school games are better needs to take their nostalgia goggles off. Games have come along way and improved in every way. After playing today games then going back it's too much, the difference is immense. Sometime it ruins it and it's better off left as a memory.
Today's games have everything graphic's, gameplay, story and they completly outshine old school games.
I really have to admit that I like both eras. However, the old classic games are by far the best in my opinion for many different reasons.
The first reason is nostalgia. Man, I remember back in the day, the good old 90's where the only games console I had was the Sega Megadrive, or Genesis for you Americans. In this day and age, I could still have fun on this, but I wouldn't play on it for hours, or invite friends over to play. However in the good old days, me and my friends could sit around on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon and play for hours on end. The games would never get boring. Hell just as I came into this thread I saw a commercial on the TV about the new sonic game. It's in 3-d, and he turns into a werewolf. Now I'm not being funny, Sonic isn't a wolf!!! I would take the old 2-D addictive classic over the new 3-d adaptations anyday.
So yeah, I like both, but the old school has to take the vote for me. I simply love it. It was certainly the most enjoyable time of my life.
There is no doubt in my mind that old school games were much more inventive than the games we are seeing atm. Todays games are mostly evolved games rather than revolutionising ones.
Is that bad? I don't necessarily think so. Sure, you get the crapfest that is the Need For Speed series among others, but in return you also get very polished shooters like CoD 4 and games with incredible detail like the Football Manager series.
So while I don't think we'll see any revolutionary games any time soon (not like Wolfenstein 3D was revolutionary) we'll still be seeing plenty of quality games coming out.
I think those old games are fun for like a minute, but I get bored really quickly. Have you tried playing pong at all? I mean c'mon. To think people actually used to sit around and "play" that stuff. What intelligence did that take?

I would easily take the old school and in fact the arcade days over this new age gaming. They might lack the graphics and advanced technology but they at least didn't create a negative social effect. If you wanted to play a game with someone they were right there playing it with you. If you wanted to play some arcade games you had to get off your ass go to a place that had them and you were in the company of others that enjoyed the same as you. It was a more social/interactive age.
Todays gaming now even though it sounds great creates a negative effect with its online play. Now people can sit at home on their ass playing others. There is no social interaction anymore. Those that grew up on the old and arcade era will probably understand while those that didn't won't which makes it difficult for them to even understand what makes them great.
Heck I would say that even arcade pinball holds better value than even half the games that are made today. Pong is actually quite entertaining if your playing with some. Its the home console equivalence to air hockey which is very fun playing with someone. Now playing something like either of those via the net or connected to someone where there is no social interaction I could see that game lasting for about 10seconds.
Meh. The older older games (SNES, NES, etc etc) I just can't get in to. It's the graphics really. Whenever I try to play them with my emulator I just can't get in to them at all, I find most of them, even the known classics, a little boring. I loved the PS2 and PS1 alot though. The graphics were good enough for my standards, and there were so many good games, I guess it was just the thought that the graphics on them were far superior to those of any of the prior consoles. The current generation is my favourite though. Not because of the graphics really, but because of the connectivity and such, playing online and stuff. Plus imo the current generation holds many better games.
