Default The Retro Club

WELCOME TO THE RETRO CLUB

There a hundreds of video games out there that represent a significant piece of gaming history and many of these are still relevant and fun for even the most experienced of gamers. This group project will help us all explore the best games history has to offer while collectively sharing our experiences with each other.

In order to have both an organized “game plan”, I thought a retro gaming club (similar to a book club) would be a nice solution to help grow the community, and spice up the video games section.

The main concept of this project is to have a designated game that every participant would play over a pre-determined period of time. Once everybody has spent time playing the featured game, everyone can give their thoughts on what they liked or disliked about the gameplay, how it holds up to today’s standards, and how it influenced later games. You can also share high scores and help other members with tactics you have learned. Even with well-known games, devoting some time to them again could give us a fresh perspective and help us re-discover some fun moments from our past.

The time devoted to each game may vary depending on its complexity or length. A week may be enough time to spend on simple games like Pong or Asteroids, but more complex or story-driven games like Metroid or Chrono Trigger may require two weeks for most people to fully experience.

With each featured game selection, there will be a bit of background information, links to helpful guide or tips, and some goals that might be worth achieving. Everyone will then be invited to jump right into the game and share their thoughts as we progress through it together.

Club Signups are CLOSED. Anyone who wants to join from here forward will have to PM me.

If there is a game you wish to be featured, please PM me any ideas you have

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

Sonic & Knuckles is a platform game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, developed by American studio Sega Technical Institute in collaboration with Sonic Team, and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1994. It is the direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which was released earlier that year. The game features unique "lock-on technology" which enables another cartridge to be plugged in via the socket on top.
Gameplay focuses on Sonic and Knuckles, Knuckles not being playable in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 because of Knuckles' role as an antagonist towards Sonic and Tails. In addition, Tails has now been removed from play. Essentially there are two separate games to tackle, depending on which character is selected at the start of the game. Although the appearance of the Zones is the same for either character, their layout and some of the bosses' tricks differs noticeably at a number of points in the game (an especially noticeable difference is that Knuckles fights EggRobo, who has different and particularly smarter strategies). Zone differences increase starting from the Lava Reef Zone onwards. Style of play, however, does not differ significantly from one character to the next as it does, for example, in Sonic Adventure.

Despite no save file slots, gameplay is much expanded than in other games, as Sonic and Knuckles do not play all of the same levels. A significant difference between Sonic and Knuckles is that they don't have all of the same moves: Sonic can jump higher and run a little faster than Knuckles, and Sonic has the Insta-Shield, while Knuckles can climb walls and break through some of the blocked entry ways. Knuckles can glide through the air with the greatest of ease.

As in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there are Bonus Stages and Special Stages. The Bonus Stages are entered by collecting at least 20 rings (or at least 50 to access the second Bonus Stage), and jumping through the bright ring of stars that appears above each checkpoint in the Zones. This time however, the gumball stage has been replaced by two new Bonus Stages. The first combines the slot machines of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Casino Night Zone and the 360° tumbling labyrinth Special Stage (to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds) of the first Sonic the Hedgehog. If three Robotniks appear on the slot machine, you lose 100 rings, or all your rings below 100. The second Bonus Stage is a large vertical course, with magnetic orbs that Sonic can use to propel himself upward. Along the way he can pick up shields, rings or lives. He is chased by a horizontal force field that slowly moves up and, when Sonic is caught in it, ends the stage, and reaching the top of the stage ends it as well.

Streets of Rage more than made up for the absence of a Megadrive version of Final Fight (in fact it had a major advantage over the SNES conversion in that it had simultaneous 2 player) and performed well enough for Sega to start development on a sequel for release the following year...

When discussing you will share your experiences, how it compares with the first time you played it (presuming you did), how much fun you had or did not have. You could also comment on how the game was innovative or how it translates to modern games. Do you see any similarities? Any aspects of the game that you notice have been implemented into modern games?
Please remember your commenting on an OLD game.
All this as well as the generic - Graphics, Story, Music, Presentation etc etc.

As a collector and hardcore retro games player, I'd love to take part.
Got a few good suggestions for ROMs too...

Count me in . I am currently getting into retro gaming, so this should help me see what are some must own games, and what I should stay away from . Plus I already have a crap load of ROMS for multiple consoles.
