Default Re: The Retro Club

Completed QuackShot. It's an excellent platforming adventure that succeeds on every level. Alluring and exciting. As enjoyable as it was in my youth.

Graphics
Visually, QuackShot is fab, with superlative sprites and stunning backgrounds giving it an almost cartoon-like appearance. Bright and detailed. Much like Castle Of Illusion, all the stages are diverse and well-drawn. The South Pole level looks gorgeous, with its colourful snowy tones and mutiple levels of waves and clouds passing by. Mexico is a mix of orange and yellow, with it mountain peaks and desert sands. The Duckberg cityscape is also impressive. Together with rapid animation and moving textures, QuackShot looks amazing. Graphically excellent.
5/5

Gameplay
QuackShot's gameplay is more complicated than most Sega/Disney titles. Donald's working inventory is extremely intuitive. Be it a key, ancient scroll or mystical staff, each item has a specific purpose. An important factor that now features prominently in many franchises, i.e. Tomb Raider/Worms/Resident Evil. Non-linear gameplay allows you to visit almost all of the game's stages in just about any order. This is a nice touch, available in very few Genesis/Megadrive games.

Donald has a large repertoire of moves, ranging from slide to dash to 'Quack Attack'. The weapon's system is well developed. Certain blocks must be destroyed with bubblegum, while popcorn is the only weapon that will eliminate enemies. The most versatile armament is Donald's yellow plunger gun. It can be upgraded twice; once to stick to walls (red), allowing Donald to climb to out of reach areas. And again (green) to allow him to stick to flying critters and pass over canyons and wide spaces. For a Genesis/Megadrive platformer, that's advanced and impressive.
5/5

Music
Longtime Sega fans will recognise the music immediately. It's composed by Bo (Kamiya Studio) and is extremely memorable. The 'Duckberg' theme is a favourite of mine, with its harmonica melody and and bouncing riff. The spooky Transylvanian motif, and jaunty 'Hideout' are both aural treats. QuackShot's sound effects are also good. When a plunger hits an enemy, a distinct thud rings out. Donald's cries of pain are authentic and convincing. Brilliant and addictive.
5/5

Entertainment
QuackShot is extremely entertaining, fun to play. The storyline is interesting and engaging. Having found a treasure map, Donald goes in search of King Garuzia's treasure. Hints of Indiana Jones hit home, adding depth and familiarity to the plot. The game's puzzles and side scrolling don't disappoint. The Maharajah maze and Egyptian mine cars break up the platforming action.

However, the game is a bit too slow paced at times, the early screens in particular. As you progress, things get tricky but never really difficult. AI stays at a similar level. Bosses fail to offer a real challenge, with Count Duckula and Pete easily beatable. QuackShot appeals more to younger, rather than hardcore/adult gamers as a result.
4/5

Ultimately, QuackShot is an exemplary game and highly recommended. Fun and enjoyable. The title has replay value; I found completing it once wasn't enough. Anyone with a Genesis/Megadrive should have a copy of QuackShot in their library. Outstanding, both at its time and by today's standards.

Quackshot is a great game for the Sega Megadrive, i remember it from when i was a kid, when i completed it multiple times. Though Quackshot is not difficult in places, it is entertaining throughout. The use of plungers is intuitive and different, also the use of an inventory is something few games, like Alex the Kidd, did. Quackshot is probably one of Disney's best games for the Megadrive, even better than Castle/World of Illusion and Micky Mania.

The game is enjoyable, and though aimed at a younger audience is still great fun. The game gets even better as you progress past Mexico and gain different colored plungers. The graphics are better than most for the Megadrive and the music is timeless, some of the best for the Sega Megadrive.

I played the game all the way though and completed all the challenges. This game was great fun, bring on the next one! 9/10

Find bubblegum ammo

Have a 'Quack Attack'

Find the secret room in the Pyramid

Find The Viking Diary

Complete the game

Extremley short game imo, abiet difficult at times. Look me little under 2 hours to finish and get all the challenges.

Graphics were top notch, and gameplay was fun with some interesting elements of thinking involved. Your weapons did more than just kill things which is kinda cool. Music was ace too.

Controls were a bit unresponsive at times, and I did find myself in impossible situations where im almost certain to get hit and lose energy. Like the fireballs chasing you up the ramps in the pyramid, or the big ghost (when it explodes into lots of little ones) in draculas castle for example.

I also thought the mission structure was confusing at times. It was too non-linear and ended up being confusing.

I was thinking, maybe Castle Of Illusion (Starring Mickey Mouse) should be a game for the retro club. Seeing as its QuackShot's counterpart, it would be interesting to see players preferences/comparisons/general observations. Would do you think?

Damn it, thought i would have the most goals done by the end of this but you two guys beat me.

Quack Attack Mini Review

Story
Not much to it, find stuff for people. Pretty dull

Gameplay
Addictive, popular gameplay is what holds this game up. Barely any glitches and its almost flawless

Sound
Pretty ok-ish music if you ask me

Enjoyability
You will enjoy this game for a while but then most likely get over it,

7.5/10

got two goals (quackattack and bubblegum) and i'll post them in a sec

Review time

GRAPHICS: As i said before, i'm not big with rating graphics for older systems because i wasn't around for that generation of gaming. Anyways It's just a meh on graphics for me

SOUND: Great music IMO, maybe not as good as road rash, But still had some great music

PLAYABILITY:Not really a game that lasts long. As Booned said it only took him about 2 hours to finish the all the goals. I can't really image this game as something you'd pull out again and again to play really.

GAMEPLAY: This was actually i really difficult game considered it was aimed at kids, and i doubt anyways completed it without getting a game over once. But anyways the gameplay was pretty meh to me, defiantly not my type of game really.

OVERAL SCORE: 6.5/10

Edit:Picture time

Quackshot

Graphics
The graphics are very nice and colourfull but nothing amazing. The backdrops are nice and each level definately gives it's own unique feel. The level designs are nice, though sometimes can be a bit repetative, such as slopes with fire wheels or spikes.

Gameplay
The gameplay is challenging, which is a suprise given that it's aimed at younger gamers. The puzzles (and the bosses) are pretty easy to figure out. A few minor glitches can cause a few annoyances, such as falling through plungers when trying to scale walls. Backtracking through levels is a bit of a pain aswell. There aren't alot of different enemies, with only a few specific to each level. I found jumping wasn't as sensitive as it could be, leading to me not jumping when i wanted to a certain times. Donald has three weapons to choose from, plunger ammo(which gets upgraded as you progrees through the game),popcorn ammo and bubblegum ammo, though I found myself just using plunger ammo unless a puzzle required me to use another.

Sound
The music is enjoyable and adds a nice light mood to the game but it's nothing amazing. Quackshot's sound effects are decent.

Overall Quackshot is a great example of how Disney games can appeal to more than just younger gamers. It's pretty short though at times can get pretty challenging. The story is very generic but you can't really expect anything much from a Disney game. I haven't played many Genesis games so i can't really compare it to other games from that era. It's far from being a great game in my opinion but it's pretty good none the less.

All challenges completed

Quack Attack

Bubblegum ammo

Secret room

Viking diary

350k+ points

Game completed
