I've strayed away from buying games in the past year with subscribing to Gamefly, but I do pick up the big releases here and there. I've basically played all the big releases so far this year, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War III, etc.
IYO, how does Borderlands compare to something like Mass Effect 2. Bare in mind, I'm not nuts about the whole RPG genre, but loved that balance that was there in Mass Effect 2.
Borderlands plays exactly like an FPS. The RPG elements involve how much damage each shot does to an enemy, leveling up, building up your special ability, and inventory (weapons, grenades, mods, and shield).
The game is pretty much a giant excuse to go kill things and find new loot to use or sell.
You know, maybe that gametrailers review wasn't the best to explain it. Check out this IGN review instead:
The only real cons with the game are few. Inventory management early on in the game can be hectic (you only get 12 slots for inventory, not including what you have equipped) and don't gain more for a few hours. Also, until you get a real hang of what makes each gun different and how each stat affects each gun, its hard to determine which gun to keep and which ones to sell. You can always ask us on here for help with gun/shield help.
More or less, if you liked the gameplay of ME2, imagine ME2 as an FPS but with mostly shooting.
