FFVIII is good on many levels. The scope is huge and FFVIII was far more epic and mature than its predecessor. However, some design choices mire its otherwise brilliant experience. Monsters level up with you, the story can be convoluted for the uninitiated, and the Junction system... ugh. Still a fantastic game, though.

I liked the Junction system aside from the blatent chore of drawing magic, first couple hours of that game are so rough because I feel forced to spend a bunch of time drawing magic. In fact I hardly even cast spells in the game for that reason.

I only ever used GFs, really. I hardly ever used Magic, unlike games like FFIX and FFXII where I used magic most, if not all, of the time. I just didn't find the need for it in FFVIII. I disliked the Draw system, and you could very well miss a valuable piece of magic as a result. Not one of the decisions I enjoyed about FFVIII.

I didn't use a whole lot of magic in XII but at least it was useful in that game unlike a lot of contemporary PRG's.

I pretty much only used Squall, Irvine and Selphie at endgame anyways. The other 3 weren't as useful.

I only used Squall, Zell, and Rinoa. I disliked Irvine, Selphie, and Quistis as not only characters, but party members as well. Practically useless, IMO.
