Re: General Gaming Discussion
When you take a moment and really digest what video games we play, a lot of 'em are inherently ridiculous when we put them into perspective. As someone said, in some games we have -
- An Italian plumber who lives in a Kingdom filled with anthropomorphic mushrooms and ruled by a human princess who repeatedly gets kidnapped by a King of fucking Turtles. He wears red-and-blue suspenders and a red hat. The Plumber eats non-anthropomorphic mushrooms to gain life and goes down pipes, fights pirahna plants, ghosts, shiitake mushrooms, and other monsters. He jumps up and down blocks. He also traverses haunted houses, floating clouds, underground caverns, and castles ruled by fucking Turtles in order to save a woman that doesn't even reward him with anything more than a kiss.
Think about that for a moment. Let's not forget -
- A long-eared kid/young adult who wears a green tunic and tights who collects hearts for life and fights a King of Pigs (or a King of Bedouins) who wants three triangles, a deranged Mask who wants a Moon to fall, and a pedophile wizard who likes young princesses. While wearing green tunics and tights, he is a chick magnet and goes off to strange lands, travels back and forth in time, and travels to bizarro worlds where milk is like alcohol. He fights living slimes, undead monsters who scream, pig warriors, octopi who live in rivers, plants who shoot seeds, and so on. He knows men who have a hard on (pun intended) for rocks. He also knows fish-people, undead dancers and gravekeepers, an all-female race of women who look like belly dancers but can also kill you, etc.
When you look at these, it makes Saints Row The Third look positively pedestrian. However, we're used to 'em, so they look normal.
To add to the BF3/COD discussion, to me it's just manufactured hype by the big two (EA and Activision). EA wants a big piece of the COD pie, so they'll brand any year-end modern shooter as an equivalent to Call of Duty in terms of "OMG, you NEED this GAME because everyone will be PLAYING IT!" They did the same with Medal of Honor last year, but they're really upping the ante now with Battlefield 3. I'm not buying the hype, and I won't be buying any of the two. Just not interested in them. Rage is the one FPS I'm interested in, though.
