Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

Wrong thread oops

Made a custom database recently with a new team called Poole Pirates in, includes me and all my mates / brother - all rated 160 with potential of 190/200 - I find this more fun than normal mode tbh

Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

Started an Arsenal Save. About 4th after 12 games, just 3 behind League leaders Everton.

Started a clear-out by loaning Ramsey to City, selling Djourou, Gervinho, Chamakh and Santos.

Brought in Guarin, Bath, Tripper, Adryan, Cavani(26 Million, most in installments), Guidetti and Hellinus. Ronaldinho is coming in January on a free as a replacement for Arshavin and Rosicky.

Playing a combination of 433, 4231 and 4132. Away form slightly sketchy, but hold home wins over Spurs and Man City. The major problem is getting Cavani to score. He's creating a lot, but I can't get him scoring like you would expect. Iv'e tried him through the middle, right forward and just behind with no luck. It's strange because Guidetti is scoring at a 1/2 rate.

Mayorga on BJ: Real men fight- maricons roll on ground and wrestle. Boxeo is número UNO! Tell BJ to box me- after I KO him, I will put him not in a body bag but in a condom so he can think that’s where he shud have stayed

Mayorga on facing Vargas: I'm going to give Vargas the chance to cash his last paycheck. I would like to say publicly that Fatty Vargas has always feared me. I conceded to take this fight at 162 pounds because fatty couldn't lose any more weight. I will do Vargas a favor by retiring him in this fight so his family doesn't have to suffer every time he steps in the ring. I'm going to do his wife a favor and not let her cry anymore.

Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

As there are so much problems with the game which even a last patch won't fix it.

I'am going back to an old FM game for the time being. FM 12 was alright but a bit buggy so that's a no.

It's either FM11, FM10 or FM09 which i will be going back too. So which version should i go back too?

Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

I thought FM12 was fine. Perhaps a little too easy at times, but at least you didn't constantly concede from crosses. I'd rather have slightly too easy than just a broken match engine altogether.

I fucking hate how when you're behind 1 goal, you change your mentality to attacking, sub 2 tired players for decent new guys and then for 40 minutes NOTHING HAPPENS. Literally no highlight. I've had this several times now, even when I changed to overload. Overload should mean at least one fucking highlight, even if it's the opponent scoring because your defenders are taking huge risks. I don't care, just let something happen. Fuck.

Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

well i started a stoke game and im actually going pretty well. a 4-5-1 formation, rigid, standard, direct passing, disciplined, hard tackling, man marking. sounds like the stoke we all know and love. except im scoring goals. and leaking them. not cool fm. anyways, it's an interesting save. you start off with 1 mil in budget and about 50k over the wage budget. not a real problem actually. i've only lost 2 games out 9 competitive fixtures. drew 1-1 with chelsea way to start the season, beat sunderland 5-1, beat stevenage 3-1 in the league cup 2nd round, lost 2-3 to city with 2 own goals and a last minute kolarov winner. beat qpr 3-0 and tottenham 2-1, lost 1-2 to bolton playing a 2nd string team but still a team that should've been good enough to win, beat southampton 2-1 and drew 2-2 with norwich after being 2-0 down with 85 mins left.

transfers out: jones (fulham, 3.8 mil), palacios (newcastle, 3.5 mil), sidibe (peterborough, 250k), nash (brighton, 130k), tonge (sheff wednesday, 525k), whelan (reading, 4.1 mil) and a couple of kids on loan)

transfers in: mattia cassani (loan, 130k a month), urby emanuelson (6 mil, 3 up front 3 over 48 months)

wanted to get a cm as backup but ness will do for not. and geoff cameron. very happy with my signings. cassani is a beast at right back and links superbly with pennant. emanuelson has been one of the best in the league, just rampant down the left scoring goals and getting assists. huth, walters and adam have also been really good. probably going to sell crouch next window, on high wages and he doesn't really work, walters and jerome have both scored more goals in less games. owen is shit. might need to get a decent backup to n'zonzi too, edu is absolute wank.

Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

So I kept Aston Villa up first season, finished 17th - 3 points ahead of the bottom 3 and losing out to 16th place West Brom on G/D, we lost the final game heavily to United so that cost us

Second season I was given a 900k wage budget and £11 million, I knew with Dunne leaving on a free I'd free up 50k already despite the board being irritated he left (I tried talking to him, not interested in an extension, my fault though I guess OR NOT)

Originally I was going to go for a diamond still, narrow with a short passing game high pressing with a dedicated defensive midfielder, I saw my first 3 fixtures and automatically knew I was f*cked

Chelsea (H) - Lost 2-0
Man Utd (A) - Lost 5-1
Tottenham (H) - Lost 1-0

It was at this point despite being against top 4 teams I had to tweak the formation slightly, I looked online and saw a lot of people say they had success with a flat 4-4-2 so I figured I'd try it out

I prepared it as a third tactic and didn't use it for a few games but I soon became quite desperate as the results were

Norwich (H) - Won 2-1
Everton (A) - Lost 1-0
Newcastle (A) - Lost 1-0
Stoke (H) - Lost 3-2

After this run the 4-4-2 came into play

That's how I set up, sure Carroll as a complete forward is a bit suspect but he's done well whilst on loan, talking of signings here they are including the ones from the current window

Explanation - N'Zogbia handed in a transfer request, he went on loan during the first season to Celtic, they had the option to buy him for £2.2 million and didn't bother, as soon as he got back he was unhappy so I put him up in the summer for transfer for £2 million, absolutely no one wanted him besides on loan so I didn't have much choice

Rafinha went out on loan because he was unsettled in England and wasn't playing football, offered him out on loan and the only non premier league club was Leeds so thought well at least he'll play, he's currently on a 7.1 rating for them on average

Weiss on a free has been solid, love having him in the side and he's not on that much money

Joe Ledley is signing on a free at the end of the season, Diouf, the young one who played for United would sign on a free but didn't get a permit, which was kind of irritating

--------------------------------------------------

Now a question or two to you lot

When managing teams with your own tactics do you use opposition instructions? I've honestly found them be more harm than good

Do you have a tactic you use for home and away games that you simply tweak the philosophy on? Or do you change the formation entirely? I'm sure as bigger teams this wont matter as much

And lastly have any of you tried tactics from fm-base and do many of them work well? A lot comes down to man management and your team but generally speaking

I have a 442 formation I use at home against all teams and away against teams I know I'll beat, and when I play a Man City/Man United etc I'll play a 451 formation to counter attack.

With Everton BTW.

Ah that's cool, btw I'm horrendous at football manager games, this season I just showed is only as a result of being sacked by Sunderland in December 2012 mainly due to the fact I had no decent performing central midfielders I'm not too disheartened as on 2 of my other saves Sunderland are 20th with the lowest points by a country mile

Do you often use opposition instructions?

Re: *Official Football Manager Discussion Thread*

your fullbacks. they're terrible. i'd push your defensive line back, play wide and on the counter attack. i dont think your players fit a fluid type of game either (without having stats in front of me). carroll as a complete forward is strange. be more direct in your passing, dont be cautious with your tackling, and don't have them roam. i'll quickly open up fm for a bit more.

okay.

guzan - i presume you're okay there, i also presume he improves later on (only jan 2013 in my stoke save)
warnock - okay. low marking, decent pace, not much of an attacking defender or a proper defender. plus is he still on 40k a week? could get someone much better, at least at either defending or attacking.
vlaar - meh. low concentration, decent marking/tackling, kinda strong, rather average overall.
donk - average. good tackling/marking, strong, horrible concentration, quite slow.

with those 4 i'd be playing a deep defensive line due to the lack of pace and train up donk's concentration otherwise it will kill you vs top class strikers. hell, even middle of the road strikers.

weiss - i like him. i've just signed him on a pre contract for stoke. good speed, good dribbling, nice flair, good technique and decent crossing. definitely something you can work with.
makoun - rubbish. get rid. has no redeeming qualities. low creativity, low strength, not fast, no real technical attributes, what exactly is he meant to actually do?
mcarthur - a strange signing. his passing is good but there's not much else. kinda creative, not fast, weak. i guess his teamwork mixed with passing and work rate can help. certainly a lot more than makoun. would start him next to defour.
bannan - you'd hope he's better than what he is on mine. wouldn't play him out wide at all. fast, but not much else. passing is good, so is creativity, decisions are poor though. low team mate and work rate, unlikely to track back and cover a defensively weak fullback. i presume you come under a lot of fire from the left hand side.

midfield is kinda meh too. makoun has no redeeming qualities, mcarthur at least works hard and bannan has pace. weiss is probably the best (other than defour who should be your number 1 midfielder based on your signings)

carroll - i rate him, and he's quite good in game if you can get things working. strong, has a good leap and heading. his finishing and first touch are on the same level as torres (who still scores). good team player and hard worker too. good addition
bent - pace. but i don't rate him. good finishing but there's not much else to write home about. kinda strong, anticipates well and is determined, but a shocking first touch, creativity and dribbling make it hard. if his finishing was 2 higher i'd say he's an excellent poacher. but at 15 it's just hit or miss.

feels weird picking apart another team when i have a starting combination of adam/whitehead in centre midfield. but that's just what i think. there's plenty of areas to strengthen and english talents arent really going to get it done. i also have no idea why you once signed rory delap. hasn't made a league start for me ,.

but yeah, just set up a tactic you find works, and find players to fit that tactic. im currently running a rigid 4-5-1, adam as a b2b mid and whitehead as a ball winning mid, with nzonzi as the anchor man behind them. shawcross and huth are excellent cb, excellent defensively, and because neither are fast, i play the deep line. marc wilson and mattia cassani as the fullbacks, mattia goes forward while wilson is more defensive. urby emmanuelson and pennant on the wings, both are absolutely excellent, pacy, run at players and quite often beat them. both can also cross the ball, where crouchy is waiting. the team is direct, disciplined creatively, aggresive with their tackling, man marking and stick to their positions, play a wide game and have regular tempo, while playing on the counter attack due to the deep line i play. currently 4th after 20 games, 9 points off 1st placed arsenal and 3 ahead of 5th placed liverpool.

all in all, just look at the strengths of your players, and design a tactic to fit their strengths.
