Have the zombie genre been milked enough?

Yes I know there is no sucha thing as zombie genre since they usually refer these games as survival horror and whatnot but seriously isn't it time we realize that instead of coming with interesting and unique enemies in the game it's simply just easier to slap zombie sticker on it and reap the profits. Wanna know why make this obvious thread? Well let me take you back a few decades.

It all started(well for me at least) with this wonderful game called resident evil 2(I know many might say I should take RE1 as an example but I rather talk from personal experience). It released in 98 and boy oh boy was I blown away by how fresh it all was. in between playing doom, duke nukem, gta1, driver, tekken 2,3 and all the other goodies that the 90's had to offer there was this one series that felt fresh. Survivor horror had just been unleashed on us recently with RE1 (although I never even given it a chance until remake was released) and my oh my it was swinging for the fences. It was all fun and at the time it felt like something unique in gaming world. Trying to escape the apocalypse while visiting mansions, laboratories, overrun cities all the while blasting zombie heads was a creepy and interesting experience.

But hell obviously along the way big cats upstairs noticed the popularity and between then and now we had games like Dead Rising, Dead Island, The Walking Dead, Left 4 Dead, 7 days to die, Dying Light etc....you start to see a pattern here?(and I don't just mean that all these games have death in their titles). Zombie genre have been milked to no end and according to sale numbers we want more so the fat cats won't be needing to give us anything fresh anytime soon and make a good living on a genre that has been milked and will continue to be milked for years to come.

Hell even resident evil which popularized the whole genre has been milked so much they haven't released an interesting RE since 4th game...and that's because they actually created something interesting with the whole las plagas and changed up everything a bit to make it seem fresh(it all went down to hell with RE5 but that's another story for another time kids)...and hell that's just the gaming world. We have movies, tv shows, novels and hell they even made an entire anime based on this popularity on this zombie genre. The growth of it just doesn't stop now does it?

So the question is do I suffer from this development? The answer is no but I do recognize that it has turned into nothing more but quick grab and little thought put into it. Something more unique than fungus on humans we saw in the last of us(and yes it is a very overrated game) which are not zombies according to official accounts but hey let's be honest here and recognize the same old idea trying to be fresh. I hope that is not too much to ask from devs but especially fat cat publishers.

Hey just sayin.

So my dear gamers what are your thoughts on this zombie popularity and how do you feel about it?

Re: Have the zombie genre been milked enough?

No. A lot of the zombie games coming out are now getting more exclusive and specific (ie. harder, more survival-ier, and lonesome). The zombie fad is now becoming a zombie genre. OP called it a zombiie genre right from the start without thinking of it. The games coming out aren't getting worse either. Maybe some aren't improving the genre, but many still are. I feel once a fad starts to simmer down and become more exclusive and specific, but still do well, it should be considered a genre.

Name 3 bad (mainstream, popularly bad) Zombie games:

1) RE 6
2) One version of the Walking Dead
3) ???

Some people will always take advantage of any fad. So even being able to name a few bad apples, you can't not acknowledge the good ones.

Yes it has been, for a long time now. Way too long.....

Re: Have the zombie genre been milked enough?

I disagree that the current zombie craze (hopefully it's died off now) began with Resident Evil. Those games were from the mid/late 90s but the 'Add a zombies mode to every game' trend began somewhere around 2009.

Zombies, like dinosaurs (who are due another 'boom period'), go in and out of fashion and this wave...ugh, unintentional pun...has lasted longer than any in memory. Keep in mind that Night of The Living Dead dates back to the 1960s and Haitian/pan African zombie legends go back far further - this is just one of many zombie eras. Also worthy of note is the mid 80s onwards horror movie revival with the colourised redux of Night of the Living Dead, resurrecting the craze and (in all likelihood) spawning things like Tales from the Crypt.

By the time I bought Saint's Row 2 in 2011, zombie survival modes were already common to the point of triteness but Call of Duty's (Black Ops maybe? I don't follow the series) zombie mode was so popular that they just kept rolling them out until you could fully expect a zombie themed DLC for everything not aimed at children...and some things aimed at children.

My problem is that I FUCKING HATE ZOMBIES. Seriously, they scare me - and I'm a fearless man. The liche style skeletal ones aren't so bad but the decomposing corpse ones haunt my dreams literally. I recently got into a turn based survival roguelike (www.roguebasin.com en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roguelike) called Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead and even though this uses Plants vs Zombies style cartoon graphics and is frikkin' turn based, I still had dreams of running around my old neighbourhood while shadowy abominations chased me and man I just hate it.

In conclusion: Hopefully because fuck zombies. Oh and it's "*Has* the zombie genre been milked enough"

Re: Have the zombie genre been milked enough?

I really don't care what the subject matter is. A great game is a great game, and if someone puts out a Game of the Year contender that has zombies in it, I will play it.

Kudos to iZombie though, for being self aware enough to make a sort of meta joke about whether or not zombies are played out in one of their episodes.

I kind of miss dinos in gaming though, some of my favorite games:

How do you milk a genre? If you don't like Zombie games then just avoid them.

Re: Have the zombie genre been milked enough?

Honestly, it isn't any more milked than the movies. I mean, holy shit, last year there were: Zombeavers, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, Burying the Ex, Life After Beth, Cooties, Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (actually pretty good), The Coed and the Zombie Stoner, Zombie Resurrection, Pro Wrestlers vs Zombies, I Survived a Zombie Holocaust, The Dead the Damned and the Darkness, Samurai of the Dead and more. Want to make a quick buck? Then make a zombie movie. This genre is played out.

Capcom at its best
