PSN name change, will it ever happen, here's why you can't ... yet according to IGN

Quote:
A couple of months ago, I wrote an editorial begging Sony to let us change our PSN names. The PlayStation Network launched in 2006 alongside PlayStation 3, and there's no way to change your name short of creating a new account, therefore losing all of your purchases, Trophies, friends, and more. (Sony has been known to manually change select users' names for various reasons, though you'll lose your Trophies if this happens.)

I brought this topic up in an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment America's President and CEO Shawn Layden. After all, changing PSN names is one of the single most-asked about features not yet on the Network. His answer surprised me, since he seemed to indicate that technical issues may not be standing in the way, as previously assumed by myself and others.

"The road map for feature extension is very long. It goes from here to Hangzhou in China," Layden remarked when I asked about not only changing one's PSN name, but about other oft-requested features like deleting unwanted Trophies. "And all of those things are on there. Yeah, we want to give you more control across your experience and your profile and your presence on the network."

"At the same time, as you'll understand, we don't want to make it so that you can go in, grief a bunch of people in Far Cry, change your avatar, change your username, go into CoD and grief everybody over there. We want to stop that."

When I asked if that issue specifically -- the risk of abuse -- is what's holding up the feature being implemented, Layden answered in the affirmative. Transparency in changing your name seems to be the issue at hand.

"[We want to do name changing] in a way that's transparent, but also don't let people morph themselves, either. And yeah, it's terrible that you have to make decisions on a service sometimes by optimizing around the bad actor. I hate that we have to do that. So we're trying to balance that between… the 99 percent of users going to have a good experience, how can we help make that happen without giving one more tool to the bad actor to go in and ruin the experience for others?"

Here's hoping Sony figures out this issue so that the many PlayStation Network users waiting to change their names -- to pay for the right to do so, even -- can get what they've been waiting for, many of them for years on end.

We'll have more from our interview with Sony's Shawn Layden soon (and you can also see an article we posted earlier today discussing PS4's meteoric sales trajectory).
Honestly, I think it's ridiculous you can't do any name changes with your account, where as I understand completely and agree also about them eliminating the people who make the online experience a pain, there are easy ways around this such as only so many name changes per account, per time or by an additional cost to change a name, this would surely eliminate those who would be out there to continue to do this, Xbox can do it, why can't Playstation?

I personally don't think there is an excuse, or is it hard really considering the technology we have and the people who work at Sony are clever people also, so why not?

Apparently Sony have considered this for a while and don't seem completely opposed to it, they know the demand for it is huge so it is a case of if they will just actually ever do it, me personally, I'm not sure they will which I think is just lazy really, thoughts?

It just sounds like an excuse to not have name changing available to users. Their is no perfect system that is immune from abuse.

Just charge people for name changes and have people wait x amount of days before they can do it again. They could also keep a list of user names on a person's profile so that anyone that views the profile can see their history of name changes.

To resist is to piss in the wind.

Yep, not only that too, on Xbox they used to do console bans I believe also, so it's really not that much of an excuse I don't think to not allow name changes, I'm not sure if it's just laziness or what and although I do admire them trying to keep down those people who make the online experience a drag, I do feel that some of this is just down to laziness really or something along those lines, it's not like it's impossible to do that's for sure.

So basically to stop people causing disruptions online we have :

A limited amount of name changes per account.

Name changes only allowed so many times over a certain period.

A charge to change a name.

Console bans for people who create multiple disruptions online.

Stopping the ability to change a name is probably one of the least ways of doing it, if people want to be abusive online they will do it regardless of what name they currently have.

I think a lot of people are in this situation, it's like those who may have made PSN ID's such as 'ILoveBritney' or whatever ... and they want to change it, but can't.

I would also adore the ability to delete games off the trophy list. I downloaded Injustice, played it once, and now its sitting there with a big fat 0% on my PSN list, and that irks me

Yeah, I've got that on something as well, I forget what it is but I just put the disc in from my brothers and got a trophy somehow, oh the UFC one or something ... and I've also got a couple of Trials Fusion trophy's too from the same thing.

I heard this being mentioned also, Sony can do it, it's just they don't want to is what they mean really, which is a bit silly I think, I'm not tech but I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to do?
