Final Fantasy VII coming to PS4 (but don't get too excited)

Quote:
Final Fantasy VII will see a release on the PlayStation 4 in Spring 2015.

Square Enix Producer Shinji Hashimoto made the announcement today during the PlayStation Experience 2014 keynote speech.

Much like the PC edition released a few years ago, this version of Final Fantasy VII will include upscaled graphics for the new hardware. It is important to note this is not an HD remake or version of the game.

Re: Final Fantasy VII coming to PS4 (but don't get too excited)

I would love a remake, but that will never happen. I just played and finished the PS1 version of FFVII a few months ago and fell in love with it all over again, but I'm not interested in playing that version again for at least another decade. If they fully remade the game with Advent Children level graphics, voice acting, and some minor tweaks, I'd be all over it. Unfortunately, that would be a venture that would be incredibly costly for Square. If they had trouble completing Versus XIII/XV for eight years, I can't imagine how long it would take them to completely remake a big game like Final Fantasy VII with the level of detail that fans have come to expect. That would be a monstrous undertaking and one that would require much manpower.

I would love a VI remake for 3DS in the same style as III and IV, but they would be skipping V, though. Not that I'd mind, since I didn't care for that game at all, but it would be interesting to see a VI remake on 3DS regardless.

Why was I supposed to be excited about them rehashing an old game in the first place?

Well a lot of people have been clamouring for a remastered version of the game, I didn't want to build their hopes up.

They're not remaking it because they don't want to risk ever ruining the original.

I fully stand by that decision.

FF7 is probably the greatest game of all time.

Either that or Metal Gear Solid.

I don't see how a remake would ruin the original. Twin Snakes did not ruin the original MGS. Resident Evil remake surely did not ruin the original or Director's Cut of Resident Evil and so on and so forth, but I can understand that line of thinking regardless. Still, the original will always exist, so there's an option. Now, if they pulled a George Lucas, that would be different. Instead, they will keep offering the original VII on PSN for years and years and years.

Re: Final Fantasy VII coming to PS4 (but don't get too excited)

Those aren't really great examples though since they were similar enough to the originals and not as huge as FFVII.

You're talking about a game created over 17 years ago. One with a world map which is very difficult to recreate now, arguably the biggest challenge and I don't think they'd ever please the majority of fans while still making it accessible to the masses. A game which had some imperfections/glitches which I'm sure some wouldn't really want removed. (W-item?)

I'd buy the shit out of a remake but I don't necessarily want one. The original is still the greatest game I have played and I still enjoy replaying it more than I enjoy playing any new release.

I'm sure they said they wouldn't remake VII until they create a new title which is as good anyway. So they're never doing a remake...

I'd also argue they've probably missed the point where it would be such an incredibly profitable venture for them now. Their reputation isn't what it was and kids/teens aren't gonna give a shit about the game.

I just bought off steam during a recent sale. Also I could have sworn it was released on psn already, maybe it was just the ps4 I suppose.
