Default Playing past games in a series first or playing the most recent game straight away?

Does anybody else feel like they should play past games in a series before getting on to the most recent one? Games coming out like the latest Metal Gear Solid, The Witcher, Uncharted and inFamous all look really good but I haven't played any of the past games so I feel I might miss out on key parts on the story. What do you guys think?

I would strongly STRONGLY recommend playing MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker at LEAST before playing the new MGS or about 70% of it will make no fucking sense to you.

I've played 1, 2, 3 & 4 multiple times but haven't played Peace Walker and even I was like wtf? until I realised I really needed to catch up on Peace Walker when I was playing Ground Zeroes.

Most games are continuations so it's best to play the previous ones to get the most out of it. At the very least, watch the story play out. If you go on Youtube, you can actually find all the pertinent cutscenes and in game dialogue scenes crammed into one 2 or 3 hour video for just about every game imaginable, which in the grand scheme of things will save you hours of time not having to physically play the old ones.

I like to at least try to start early. I used to want to start right from the beginning, but then I was like "Ocarina was my first Zelda, I can give some leeway". Depends on the series.

I took a nice long break from most single player games in high school (not exactly sure why since I had all the time in the world since it was fucking high school), but I generally won't play the older games if it's a series I'm unfamiliar with, especially since a lot of sequels released recently are reboots or new stories for current gen consoles (i.e: InFamous Second Son, Tomb Raider, to a degree AC Black Flag)

The Uncharted trilogy is def necessary. Also, you don't want to miss out on it. If you have a PS3 def pick those 3 games up. Or wait for the inevitable port to PS4.

Never got the chance to play the first 2 Witcher's. Always wanted to. My PC isn't good enough for those games lol and I don't have a 360.

Infamous isn't too necessary, but go for it if you have a PS3. The games are dirt cheap now.

Yeah. Don't pick up games in a series out of sequence at all ... It really isn't any fun. I tried Assassin's Creed IV (even though it's touted as a standalone game, but it still made little to no sense to me) before I played the entire series and even though i got into the game, it wasn't as much fun.

I started playing from the start and in sequence and it's infinitely better. Easier to get into each subsequent game (since I'm already used to the controls) and not at all overwhelmed by story or gameplay elements.

The only games that you should play out of sequence are those that belong to a franchise, but are fully stand alone games imo.

I try my best to play games in sequence, but it doesn't always happen unfortunately. There are tonnes of great games to experience and, sadly, my time is limited.

Definitely this. I started with MGS2 and did not know anything that was going on at all in the story. Which took alot of the enjoyment out of the game so I stopped playing midway and beat MGS1 and then restarted MGS2 before playing MGS3 and so forth.

I'll play games without sequence depending if they're story heavy or not. Which for MGS, is very.

I can't really say anything about InFamous since i've only played the first and found it pretty boring so I never finished. Uncharted shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as you get the relationships between the characters (Sully is his partner, Elena is his on/off love interest, etc.) MGS you should at the very least play MGS 3 & Ground Zeroes to set up why Snake is who he is at that point (and of course there is Peace Walker but i've not even completed that yet)

The Witcher, however is a whole other animal. You probably could pick up the game and have an idea of whats going on (Geralt is a amnesiac mutant that hunts monsters, and is also hunting a supernatural force chasing after a special young girl he once took care of) because its 2 games deep now and the games are based on a series of books (set before the games) from Poland and they aren't even all available in the US yet despite being written years ago (good stuff though). So yeah if you want the full experience you might want to Wiki the Witcher and what exactly has happened so far.

Or at least get The Witcher 2, because its a fucking awesome game.
