Default Final Fantasy series

Ok, I have a question for everyone, basically wanting you guy's opinions. This series, for years was the standard bearer for RPGs, most everyone's "first" true RPG was their 6 or 7, and they will constantly refer to it as the best in the series. Personally, 8, 10, and Tactics are my favorites, but that is not the purpose of this. This post is about 13, and the convoluted mess of shit that it is.

Why do people love 5?
-job system, good story, hilarious dialogue(stuff about Farris before finding out her sex is hilarious)

Why do people love 6?
-It has a very deep storyline, and it has 16 characters, each with their own backstory and sidequests, and it wraps everything up in a nice neat little bow(6 is not a favorite of mine, but I will concede that Locke is an amazing character)

Why do people love 7?
-Sephiroth apparently......and that its their first real RPG, its huge, had an engrossing story at the time, very good cast of heroes, minus a retarded robot cat(footnote, I know that his name is Cait Sith, and I never rename characters in a game, I alwaus left them default, but for some reason, every time I played 7, I HAD to rename Cait Sith as Bald Knob, and I'm not sure why)

Why do people love 8?
-great hero, great story, wonderful secondary antagonist(Seifer), GF actually had a purpose to storyline, and you could boost them during an animation for more damage.

Why do people love 9?
-throwback to the old times, less steampunk, more fantasy swords and sorcery stuff

Why do people love 10?
-Honestly I thought 10s story was top notch, maybe the best in the series. I dont want to spoil it but it is really thought provoking, and sad. Game was visually stunning for the time, and holds up to this day.

Why do people love 12?
-Do. Not. Know.

Now, I left out the off shoots like Tactics, and 10-2, and 11, even though I played 11 from 2004-2011. I am now getting to the heart of this post: Final Fantasy 13.

13 was a mixed bag of shit on story, they retarded the battle system worse than 12, and oh god the characters and the story was just NOT interesting. Fang was a great character, but jesus christ that was it. Now, who's the covergirl for 13? Lightning. Apparently at the end of 13, they felt that was a cliffhanger, so we get 13-2. 13-2 was a hilarious "attempt" to recapture some old school Squaresoft magic from Crono Trigger with the time travelling, and how the past affects future and all that. But 13-2 was fucking awful. Primary characters, Noell, and Serah(Lightnings sister who was a crystal through the entirety of 13), NOT Lightning. Still, covergirl? Lightning. You control her for maybe 10 minutes in the game. But she is the primary character, it all revolves around her. Now, apparently, 13-2 deserves a direct sequel(it did end on a cliffhanger), with Lightning as once again, the main character.

I have never asked anyone about their favorite hero in a FF game and gotten "Lightning" as a reply. You ask people that question, youre getting a shitload of Clouds, a few Squalls, maybe a Tidus here or there if he wasnt so whiney, probably a good bit of Shadows, or Sabins. You ask some girls you'll probably get Yuna. Youre not getting Lightning. I have to look at Lightning, as if she were John Cena, because the public doesnt respond the way the corporation wants you to respond, yet it's like Square wants to push Lightning as the definitive FF hero. Just game after game after game. And they plaster her all over the stuff too. It just strikes me that Square seems like WWE in that "No, you will not like who you want to like, you WILL like who WE tell you to like." For christs sake they even gave her Clouds soldier uniform as a an outfit......that screams "Cena clinging onto more popular stuff to put himself over."

Maybe I look too deep into this, but I am bored and decided to throw this out there. Get some opinions on this board.

When playing 13 I felt like the game was just playing itself. I had no input to the linearity.

That was until you get to around the Archylte Steppe when I felt the game became somewhat, what a FF game should be. Big open map with lots of monsters, side missions and the general landscape felt much more surreal than the generic war torn futuristic human landscapes we were funneled into at the start of the game.

That's why I have to applaud FF 13-2 somewhat for trying to offer something a lot different. Travelling through time and choosing different worlds was pretty interesting. Just a shame that game was ruined by a convoluted storyline and relatively terrible characters.

I really can't comment much as I was never a big FF fan. My first RPG was Breath of Fire 2 and I have more of a kinship with that franchise than FF and like other RPG games like Star Ocean and DragonQuest. Additionally Ive only played 7,8 and 9.

But from my understanding and what Ive seen of the game, the problem is that it tries to hard to be a movie rather than a game and thats what hurts it.

FF1: I personally still enjoy just as a basic game but the story is lacking and the characters are non exsistent.

FF2: Enjoyable story and characters but the levelling system is terrible.

FF4: Great game, own the DS version so it was pretty difficult, however it was worth the money and time

FF7: Fell in love with it, the graphics are pretty ugly by todays standards but everything else was fantastic, FUCK the final boss though.

FF8: Enjoyable but I struggled to get into this game and I'm still not sold on some of the characters or the story.

I do own FF 5/6/9 as well but I don't like starting a new RPG until I've finished the one I'm currently playing.

Don't really agree with all of the OP but with regards 13, I avoided the game myself. My brother played it and pretty much said what Hannibal said above so it put me off. I did play 13-2 though and to my surprise enjoyed it. Maybe my standards are so low for the series nowadays and I'm not saying it was amazing or anything but it kept me interested for the most part. My brother pointed out that it corrected some of the mistakes they made with 13. I might get 13-3 but I'll check reviews first probably.

I keep trying to temper my excitement for 15 because I don't want to be disappointed and Squeenix have done a pretty good job of that themselves but everything I see with that game looks very good.

Was Lightning really that bad? Obviously I haven't seen much of her

yes. She was built up to have 13 revolve around her, but ended up having the personality of cardboard. Its just like Square is wanting Lightning to be the only hero from the series anyone knows or remembers, because that company has fell the fuck off from what it used to be and has no idea how to make a good RPG anymore.

Tactics and Vagrant Story are better than almost all of those.
