Default I feel like Bobby Roode is lacking something

So, I'm a huge Roode fan. Love the guy. I think he's one of the best parts of TNA.

That said, I feel like he's lacking something: A distinctive move. Or hell, maybe a few. I know, I know. Wrestling isn't about the moves. Blah blah blah. But the moves you use go a big way in determining your character. I find it hard to get into his matches, because I never know what to look for. I mean, he's got the spinebuster and the fisherman's suplex but why should I care about them? Neither one feels like a big Bobby Roode move to me. By contrast, when I watch Hardy? I know when to watch for the Twist, or the Whisper in the wind. I don't think I'm the only one either. When Bobby hooks that leg for the Payoff, shouldn't there be a pop? There isn't. I don't think you ever hear the crowd respond.

I think he could work on this. Work on developing some distinctive stuff for me to watch for as a fan. Or hell, if he wants to keep using that stuff? Give us a reason why. Give us some vignettes on his love of old school wrestlers. Show us his inspiration. Train us as an audience what to look for.

Anyway, my two cents. Do you agree? Am I wrong on this? When he hits the Spinebuster, do you go "Oh, there's one of his signature moves" or do you just sorts shrug? Let's talk about it, wrestlingforum.

I absolutely agree with you. You know when Aries is in the ring or Hardy like you mentioned, you know the match could end as soon as the brainbuster or twist of fate hit. With all the Bobby Roode matches, you dont know how he is going to win, which sometimes can be a good move.

But then I look at it the other way. His entire World Title run didnt have many clean endings and he rarely won a match with his fisherman suplex or RR spinebuster. When Aries won all his X-Division matches, he won with the brainbuster or signature submission manouver. It's all the way you book a character and thats how Roode was booked. Now, he is kind of left without a finisher again which is why they had Aries hitting the 450 in the last match.

It's a problem for another day but with how he has been booked in the past, he wouldnt have a finisher to put over in the first place, so why try?

Sounds like you should be blaming the fans & bookers more than Roode's finish itself.

If the booking put more emphasis on it being his "finisher" than it would have some aura behind it. Likewise with the fans. If they knew what was going on in the ring instead of being casual tourist yahoos (obviously directing the specified remark towards the Impact Zone) they would buy the spots when the move was hit and think the match could have a decent, if not good, chance of being over.

I have no idea why he stopped using Northern Lariat (or he uses it like twice a year in the middle of a match). He was a lot less muscular when he was using it as a finishing move against guys like Rhino and now that he looks like a total beast, he uses a freaking Perfect plex. Makes no sense to me.

Agree. The Spinebuster and the Fisherman Suplex are supposed to be his big moves but they don't feel so big. He needs a new high-impact finisher. Actually, he has needed it for quite some time now. He's been doing pretty well without it anyway, but he still needs a definite finisher.

I dig the spinebuster.

I felt the opposite last year actuslly. I though that he was actually a rare case of someone who had a number of ways to end a match. When you consider the type of champion he was he wasn't exactly winning clean every night so I guess there wasn't a huge need. The perfect plex and crossface/armbar both seemed to have an equal chance of ending a match so if anything I always felt it added more to his nearfalls. Plus he could always just say fuck it and go for the belt to hit them with. The lariat was legit but I couldn't see it as any more than a signature these days.
