I read that TNA was ready to expand outside wrestling entertainement. Yesterday I was watching television and suddendly found American Gladiators. It gave me one idea named "Impact Show".
American gladiators had great ratings and was followed by a lot of fans around the world. It was closely related to pro-wrestling and WCW. Hulk Hogan was the announcer and the ultimate gladiator was The Beast (Matt Morgan), various gladiators also became wrestlers.
I don't know why but American Gladiators hooked me and I was unable to stop watching the candidates and the Gladiators fighting in various competitions and feats. This show was purely awesome !!!
I think that TNA must use American Gladiators popularity and the fact that this show was well followed and never really lost popularity until his ending. I consider such a show as one good way to introduce wrestlers to the main audience and to expand the fanbase.
A second TV show like this one is also one good solution to get not only money, but also TV contracts. You could sell this "Impact show" alongside wrestling matches in one pack.
The fact that it was unscripted showed the audience that wrestlers aren't simply actors, but athletic beasts.
Of course you could consider that this idea isn't pro-wrestling, you would be right. But I think that this idea is the best thing to compete with the current MMA trend in terms of popularity and ratings.
It would be just great, if TNA chose to recreate this show remplacing the gladiators by TNA wrestlers (of course WWE could try that too).

I'm not sure about recreating the show, but if they wanted to tweak the whole format of "Pro-wrestling" (which hasn't really changed a lot since the 30s or before) then introducing Gladiators-style contests could be a possibility. After all, is there really much difference between some of the American Galdiators-style contests and some gimmick matches (ladder match, cage match etc)?
Don't know if it would work but it would certainly be different to what any of the competition is offering.....?
As far as branching out into that sort of show - it makes sense - cross-promoting the products by having roster members as guest Gladiators would be good PR. Then again, presumably the original show got cancelled for a reason.
I watched the original American Gladiators back when it first started. It got stale after a couple of seasons. Not sure that dog can still hunt in today's market.

Thanks. Indeed it would be different and a great mean for cross-promoting.
To answer your question the first American Gladiators (USA : September 1989 to May 1996) was cancelled due to one financial fraud suspicion and drugs issues.
NBC American Gladiators featuring Hulk Hogan (2007-2008 season) was cancelled due to low ratings. But this low ratings was mainly due to the fact that they used far too many gimmick matches (East versus West Coast, electrician versus satellite engineer, Marines versus Cop). It was just becoming ridiculous. People love the fact that everybody was competiting and hated this concept.
To be sure about the potential sucess, just remember that American Gladiators became one worldwide franchise and that the swedish show is still on-air in 2012.
