Could someone give me a brief update on what is going on with AJ at the moment?

He's in the middle of a long-winded storyline of how this is his worst year with TNA, recently lost to Daniels at Final Resolution and quite a few people are expecting a heel turn in 2013.
AJ also got pinned in a #1 Contender match for the World Title featuring James Storm and Bobby Roode. A stipulation placed in that match means that he cannot get a World title shot until BFG 2013.

It seems like they are also leading to another AJ Styles heel turn aswell, which I personally feel is needed, he works much better as a heel, and has always been better on the mic as a heel..

Personally, I don't think he's heading for a heel turn. TNA has an abundance of top heels and is nowhere near as well-stocked with good faces.

Besides, Aries vs AJ is the dream feud people want to see and if that is coming in 2013 then it makes sense for Aries to be heel and AJ to be face.

I think all they're doing is giving his 2013 push some context. If they pushed him without this "worst year ever" angle, then it would just be yet another AJ push - yet another one of many. so who cares? Whereas giving him this bad year at least gives him the angle of "AJ pluckily fights back against the odds," which I think is the direction they're going to head in.

He's doing a losing streak ish gimmick where he almost always loses and is having all kinds of problems. He also can't get a title shot until BFG 2013.

With AJ now turning heel, I hope he will get a spot in where he will be put on screen with a strong character again (before all the gimmicks from this year with AJ). I do prefer AJ as a face, because in my opinion he should be used as WWE uses Cena as their poster boy, but as AJ is now turning heel (and won't go for the WHC due to him losing that opportunity) maybe he will be the X Champ again.

Hoping he goes back to the X division for a year. Him being there and having great matches with the likes of King, Kash, Ion and RVD and eventually Sorenson and Sabin will help to build the division back up. It's obvious to me that AJ is winning the BFG series next year so this will be a good thing for him to do in the meantime.
