A lack of desire and commitment on his part. If he wanted to be a superstar badly enough, he'd make sure he looked the part. I wouldn't push a guy who wouldn't get in shape, either.

Main Event Mafia. Even though his world title win happened later than it should have the match with Kurt at Lockdown was really good and his popularity started increasing. I remember showing it to some casual wrestling fans at my college and they all thought it was great. Then the incredibly boring feud with Booker T and losing the title to Sting at Bound for glory killed all his momentum. He's never been the same since and my enthusiasm for TNA waned.

they took too long to give him tihe title
they gave him the mic for him to cut hammy promos way too often
he lost his passion and got fatter
he got jobbed out to too many wwe castoffs to be credible ever again

They ruined Joe the moment Angle came in and beat him...

Angle vs Joe was a match people were salivating at the idea of. The match should not have happen at Genesis 2006, and Joe shouldn't have lost.

How much more would it have meant if they had build the match up for BFG 2007, a full year after joining TNA, Angle is the TNA World Champion. Joe wins a tournament to become the number 1 contender.

Joe goes on to beat Angle at BFG 2007 while still being undefeated.

THEN Joe could have been huge, but to give him the title almost a year and a half after he lost to Angle and killed his momentum was useless at that point, he wasn't the unstoppable monster anymore.

And of course the Nation of Violence Joe, and MEM Joe didn't help.

Classic case of a wrestler being built up on an undefeated streak and losing all his steam when beat.
Remains a tremendous athlete and has been on a role since his match with AA.

I heard of Samoa Joe before I heard of TNA.

He was the reason I tuned in first time around (I think we was undefeated at the time).

When I saw him recently he came across as a jobber.

He's not really a jobber; I mean, he came second in the BFGS table and is now a champion (albeit a minor one) however I do see where you're coming from.
