I agree. For their big anniversary show, the build has been poor. It really hit me after last week’s show when I realized they didn’t even run through the announced matches once on Impact, the card isn’t fully announced with a week to go, and the matches they seem to be building aren't happening on the PPV. It’s unfortunate as this is supposedly one of their biggest shows of the year and the top three matches should be good-great.
I remember last year on the PPV they had each of the KotM participants spend two or three minutes talking about what it would mean to win the match. I think it would’ve been a great idea to have done that again this year except run those promos on TV instead of the PPV people already purchased; say one or two a week on the show following their qualifier (I hope they do something like that this week, but I doubt it). Instead, as you mentioned, the build for that match is no where to be found: Foley and Jarrett are doing bad comedy bits; AJ is focused more on the Daniels/Douglas feud than his chance to become World Champion again (he even missed TV the week after he qualified for the main event); Joe is focused on taking out the MEM ending with Angle who is in the match, but isn’t champion nor the leader of the group; Angle is preoccupied with Sting, Morgan, and the Mafia drama. Do any of those guys even want to be champion?
In the X Division KotM, the challengers didn’t have to qualify like in the other KotM, the challengers have had very little interaction with the champion, the champion wasn’t even on the show this week, and I’m not even sure why Lethal Consequences want to unmask Suicide. Although they’re supposedly heels, I think they’re wasting a good opportunity by not having the Guns cut a substantial promo on being in a title match in their hometown akin to what Christian did last year and 3D did this year (they may do that this week, but again, it’s doubtful).
In the tag title program, the last two weeks they seem to have spent more time focusing on the British Invasion maybe injecting themselves into the tag title picture than on Team 3D vs. Beer Money. To me, it seems like they're looking ahead to the B show next month rather than the A show this month.
Daniels/Douglas actually has had a fair amount of build; it just makes no sense. Them jumping to a loser leaves town match after three weeks is kind of stupid and out of left field. It’s completely absurd for Daniels to be willing to put up his job here.
The Knockout’s Title match is the only match whose build I can’t complain about other than that terrible backstage segment last week when the Beautiful People tried to jump Tara.
