Re: Favorite TNA PPV?
I'll say one that I don't think will get mentioned by anybody else, but was a PPV that I thought was fantastic.
Slammiversary 2006. This was when TNA was at its best IMO. The feuds going into this show were hot and the matches delivered big time. It was an amazing PPV and to me it was one of the better PPVs of 2006, but it kind of got overlooked come the "End of the Year" awards on most sites and boards.
Opening Match was Team 3D vs. The James Gang (VKM) in a Bingo Hall Brawl. These two teams were feuding over who was the greater team. The Dudleyz beat them for their first WWF tag titles way back in 2000 when both teams were with the WWF, and The James Gang got their win back at Sacrifice the month before, so this was seen as the Rubber match. Team 3D came out on the preshow and demanded that the match begin immediately and then went to the back to hunt The James Gang down, so the PPV actually kicked off with Team 3D throwing the James Gang up the aisle way and a massive brawl. It was really cool. Surprisingly, this was actually a very good hardcore match. It was definately The James Gang's best match in TNA (and probably their second best ever behind The Dumpster Match from Wrestlemania XIV) I was really shocked by how good this match turned out.
Next up was Rhino vs. Bobby Roode & Scott D'Amore. This was one of the early signs of TNA showing interest in using Roode as a singles star, so he got put in this mini fued with Rhino. The match was entertaining. Basically it was just a set up for D'Amore to get The Gore, and the match delivered on that, so it was good. I wish D'Amore would come back to TV. He was a good heel manager.
The X Division was on display next in a Six Way Elimination Rankings Match. Senshi, Alex Shelley, Shark Boy, Sonjay Dutt, Jay Lethal, and Petey Williams were put into one of those Multi Man X Division Matches that have been somewhat of a staple with TNA PPVs. These kind of matches are usually used as a way to get guys on the show , as a way to excite the crowd with pretty moves, and as filler for the card. Some people tend to see these kind of matches as one of the better matches on the card, but I disagree. I always felt like for the most part, if you've seen One Multi Man X Match, you've seen them all, but this one was definately a cut above the rest. Senshi, Sonjay, and Alex Shelley were awesome in this match. The match also got a good amount of time and it wasn't a complete spotfest as they managed to work really well to tell a good story. IMO, this is about as good as you can possibly get with these kind of matches. I don't know if its on any of the Best of the X Division DVDs, but it definately should be. I can't believe people talk about the BFG 05 4 way all the time, and then overlook this one. This one was much better.
I was really looking forward to the next match, and it didn't disappoint. Kevin Nash vs. Chris Sabin was a really hot feud for TNA. It didn't get the appropriate payoff unfortunately, but it gave us some of the best TV segments in Impact history. It was such a natural thing to do. The IWC always accuses Nash of being a selfish bastard that holds down young talents and they also say that the X Division should be the main part of the show. I mean my God, this is the IWC's dream feud! Or at least it should be. They got themselves a great heel and a great face. Anyways, Sabin & Nash meshed very well with each other and did a David vs. Goliath kind of match, whcih I love. Shelley got involved too, and all in all it was a really good match up.
The Tag Team Titles were up next with AJ Styles & Chrsitopher Daniels taking on the champs AMW. I just reviewed the Best of AJ Vol. 2 DVD in another thread and this match is on there. IMO, AMW vs. AJ/Daniels was one of the best feuds in 2006. They had awesome matches while also giving us a great rivalry with AMW constantly cheating AJ/Daniels from victory. They had two great matches before this, one at the New Year's Impact and the other at Sacrifice 2006, but this one beats them all. It was actually my favorite match of 2006. It was an incredible tag team match between two of the best teams in TNA history. Truly awesome.
Next up they brought out Jim Cornette, who was making his debut as the new authority figure in TNA, a position he still holds today. It was a pretty good promo by Jim. That's about all there is to say here.
Samoa Joe vs. Scott Steiner, at the time, was the biggest match in TNA history where there was no title on the line. It was a great set up becuase you had two guys that are legit bad asses. Joe had dominated TNA for a year, while Steiner's reputation from WCW carried over, and it ended up being a very good pairing. The built Steiner up like he was Joe's toughest challenge at the time, and it worked as Steiner was the first that was able to match Joe in terms of power. Joe came off looking really good in this match and it was the first major match for Joe in the heavyweight division. The match was very good as well as I felt Steiner silenced some of his critics for at least a little bit.
And of course Slammiversary just isn't complete without The King of the Mountain Match. Champion Christian Cage vs. Sting vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. Abyss vs. Ron Killings (why the fuck was he in this?) The booking that went into this was just brilliant. They played up the Sting/Jarrett rivalry while also planting the seeds for an eventual Christian heel turn. And of course the gimmick of this match is just a winner. I think I like KOTM more than Ultimate X. It's just a really cool match. And the ending. Well I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I thought it came off extremely well and reminded me of a time in wrestling when heels were legitimately hated. It was great.
Slammiversary 2006 is a somewhat overlooked PPV, but IMO, few TNA PPVs were on its level (and that's saying something becasue there have been some awesome ones)
