Most people here are overrating things, I'd say.
I would just say your underrating them TBH, your ratings are pretty inconsistent sometimes IMO.

I dunno, they just seem somewhat inconsistent to me at times.

Like saying Austin/Rock never had a 4* match, or rating Bret/Owen Cage match ***1/4. Then giving a short TV match with no finish ***3/4, just seems inconsistent to me.

I never said Austin/Rock didn't have a 4*. I just said there Mania matches aren't ****. Their Backlash match I consider ****.

Lets continue this in the WWE DVD thread, though if ya want.

And that right there is part of the reason I don't like to use the star system.

There is just no consistency with it because it is all up to personal opinion.

I prefer to just write down what I liked and didn't like about the match and let my words speak for themselves.

Hope this catch up some discussion

Slammiversary 2008 - AJ Styles vs Kurt Angle

I was really looking forward to this match and didnt dissapoint. Probably the 2 biggest stars in TNA in one match. Its good to see AJ as a face and not getting his ass kicked in the whole match. Both changed punches, people cheering for AJ and booing angle. I marked for both, AJ and Angle overhead german suplexes, insane stuff. AJ looked very strong kicking out of the Angle slam from the top rope altough everybody kicks out of the slam nowdays lol. There was a nice spot of Angle reversing the Styles Clash into the Ankle lock but AJ reached the rope. Karen comes to the ring with a chair and distracted Kurt. For a min I thought he was giving the chair to him, that could hurt the match.

AJ Styles wins after a Styles Clash on Angle.

Good stuff.

I agree completely. That having been said, I am still expecting a rematch and something better with a more healthy Angle.

His ratings are accurate, more or less.

Default Re: Official TNA DVD Help/Discussion/Review Thread

I just rewatched Slammiversary 2007. I'll go ahead and review that. It was one of my favorite PPVs last year, although I can see most people stating the opposite.

- The opening video was kind of cool with clips from the weekly PPVs and them replaying clips from the early Wednesday PPV shows. That was part of what I felt was missing in this year's Slammiversary. The show is supposed to be a celebration of TNA's birth, but 2008's show didn't really have that. But then again, I guess you can'r do the same thing every year. Eventually people are going to get tired of it.

BTW, the theme song they used for this PPV was just awesome. I love country music so this right up my alley, and it fit with the PPV.

- Opening match was Rhino & Senshi (replacing Chris Harris) vs. LAX. Harris' reason substitution was never explained (although we could figure it out by the end of the show). Now this match seems like random fodder on PPV, but they delivered a very good and exciting tag team match. All four guys meshed very well, especially Senshi & Hernandez who seem to have great chemistry. This match was pretty exciting.

- Next up was the X Division Championship match with Chris Sabin defending against Jay Lethal. If you want a good X Division title match, then check this one out. I think its pretty underrated actually. It's only about 10 minutes, so its not on par with the classics like AJ/Joe, AJ/Daniels, AJ/Lynn, AJ/Joe/Daniels, or Sabin/Senshi but it was still a really good showing for these two young stars.

- The next match surprised me as James Storm & Ron Killings took on Jerry Lynn and former NFL star Frank Wycheck. This was actually a pretty entertaining match. Making it a tag match helped hide Wycheck's weaknesses and to be honest, he looked damn good in there when he did get in. James Storm was the star though as his heel work in this match was just priceless. I remember expecting this match to be a stinker, but it was actually quite entertaining.

- Bob Backlund vs. Alex Shelley - OK this match was not so good. Backlund basically just squashed Shelley here and after the match there was a bunch of insanity that set up the Backlund/Lynn vs. Motor City Machine Guns match at Victory Road. It was a bad match, but the angle was good, and at least it was short.

- Another match that I'm glad they kept very short was VKM vs. Basham & Damaja. It's amazing, but that VKM vs. Christy Hemme feud produced some of the worst matches in TNA history. This was probably the best match in the feud just because it was so damn short (around 2 minutes I think) and they still managed to bore people!

- Back to the good stuff, I thought Eric Young vs. Robert Roode in a Freedom Match damn near stole the show. Now a lot of people will disagree with me here, but the build up to this match was great as everybody was behind EY and hated Roode, and they did a great swerve ending. When Roode got the pinfall, my heart sank as I legitamately felt sorry for EY, but when the match got restarted, the fans got the happy ending they wanted. I thought it was great stuff, and it really reminded me of the Virgil vs. DiBiase match from Summerslam 1991 (another forgotten classic) This was my favorite match of the undercard for sure.

- Tag Team Championships were up next. Now it was supposed to be Team 3D vs. The Steiner Brothers, which would have been huge, but Scott got injured in Puerto Rico and the dream match had to be put on hold. Now nothing they could have come up with could possibly match a Dudleyz vs. Steiners encounter, but TNA came pretty close by bringing in Road Warrior Animal as Scott's replacement. The match itself was decent, and it was really cool to see a Steiner & a Road Warrior working together. It was like a tag team legends match, and really fun to see.

- Sting vs. Christopher Daniels was a pretty good match. Unfortunately, I think this was the one match that truly suffered from lack of time. If they had given them 15 minutes, they could have had a MOTYC IMO, but they only got about 7 minutes. However, in that time, they gave us a pretty damn good match. Daniels had some great counters for Sting and overall I thought they meshed very well. I wish they hadn't dropped this feud as this was something I definately wanted to see more of.

- Abyss vs. Tomko in a NO DQ match - This was a much better match than expected. I think this was the match they made people go "HUH?!?! I thought Tomko sucked!" which he did in the WWE, but in TNA Tomko has found a footing and this was the first time any of us got to see what Tomko could really do. It was a nice violent hardcore match, and Tomko really earned his stripes in this one. Now alot of people will mention the fakeness of Tomko landing in a pile of cardboard boxes on the big fall, but to be honest, I still think that would hurt (does anybody here want to jump off a scaffold and land on cardboard boxes) Anyways, this was a pretty good match.

- Next up we got a special speech from Jeff Jarrett as he talked about the passing of his wife Jill, the history of TNA, his future in wrestling, and gave the TNA fans a special thank you. It was a very emotional speech and one that brought a tear to the eyes of many TNA fans I'm sure.

- And of course no Slammiversary is complete without The King of the Mountain Match. Chris Harris was announced to be the fifth and final man in the match, explaining why he was pulled from the opening tag team match. Other participants included "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles, Christian Cage, Samoa Joe, and Kurt Angle. Now I've already talked about this match, and many people hold it up as the best KOTM to date, and I agree. It was the best showing of this gimmick to date, and if I were going to introduce anybody to this gimmick match, I would definately show them this match. It was a damn good main event with all five guys giving stellar performances all around. One of the best matches of 2007 period.

Some people rag on Slammiversary 2007 mainly because the brevity of some of the matches or that there were too many matches. But IMO, the undercard was highly entertaining and the crowd was hot for almost everything so it was a pretty fun show throughout and then of course we closed with the amazing King of the Mountain match. To me, the sum was greater than the parts, and this show delivered one satisfying wrestling event. Hey 10 matches, and I thought 8 of them were at the very least good, so I'd say you're getting pretty solid action throughout.

Now some might argue that this year's Slammiversary overall had better matches (AJ/Angle, Kaz/Petey etc.) but I don't think it was as good because it didn't have the same atmosphere and energy that last year's show had. It's like comparing One Night Stnad 1 & 2. For the most part, the second ECW ONS had longer & better matches, but nobody thought it was as good as the first. Why? Because the same feeling of ECW truly being back wasn't captured as well in the second show as the first.

But at this point I'm just rambling. I highly recommend picking up the Slammiversary 2007 DVD for another reason. The awesome Chris Harris vs. James Storm King of the Mountain Qualifying Match from Impact is included as a special feature. That was probably the best Impact match of 2007, so if you liked Slammiversary, but wasn't sure if you wanted the DVD, consider that extra motivation.

Match Rankings
1) King of the Mountain
2) Eric Young vs. Robert Roode
3) Chris Sabin vs. Jay Lethal
4) LAX vs. Rhino/Senshi
5) Sting vs. Christopher Daniels
6) Abyss vs. Tomko
7) Frank Wycheck/Jerry Lynn vs. James Storm/Ron Killings
8) Team 3D vs. Rick Steiner & Animal
9) Alex Shelley vs. Bob Backlund
10) VKM vs. Basham/Damaja

And if I were going to throw Harris/Storm from Impact on there, I'd place it 2nd behind KOTM.
