Default Re: Official TNA DVD Help/Discussion/Review Thread

Just picked up "Phenomenal: The Best of AJ Styles Vol.2" and it is a very good best of DVD and it compliments Vol 1 very well, and I would recommend picking up both if you can get them.

- The DVD has some nice interviews where AJ talks about his past, how he got into wrestling, how he came to TNA, his family life, and various other things. It is very nice to hear about Aj's life a little bit and AJ really does come across as one of the nicest guys in wrestling. Vol 1 had some short interview segments, and some of the things from Vol.1 are repeated here, but Aj goes a little bit more indepth and we get to see AJ with his family and things like that which is nice.

And of course the main reason to pick up any wrestling DVD is for the matches, so lets see how this set did:

Well the Vol 1 ended with AJ defeating Jarrett for the title in the cage match back in 2004, and this one begins with Lockdown 2005, so there is about a year that wasn't covered. Not a whole lot was missed. The big matches that were left out were his Ironman Match with Daniels from AGA05 and his first two Ultimat X matches, but I think the Iron Man match and the UX from FR05 might be on one of the Best of the X Division DVDs, so maybe that's why they were left off.

What I really liked is that Vol. 2 did what the first DVD did and that was showcase AJ's greatness in all three divisions (Heavyweight, X, and Tag) as AJ has done extremely well in all three.

- And like I said it starts with Lockdown 2005 where AJ Styles took on "The Monster" Abyss in the main event, with the winner getting a title shot against Jeff Jarrett at Hard Justice. This was an awesome match up. I'd say its one of the best matches on the set. I always loved watching Abyss and AJ wrestle each other. They have always had great matches with each other, and this one was their best. This match was pretty brutal, and IMO it proved that the Lockdown concept can work because these guys were able to have an awesome match after having to follow 7 cage matches.

- Next up is AJ's title match against Jarrett at Hard Justice. Now some of the best matches from the Weekly PPV era were AJ Styles vs. Jeff Jarrett. I've already referenced their cage match in 2004, and their best was the first match they had in early 2003 (which is on TNA's old Best of Title Matches DVD) This match didn't quite live up to those IMO. It belongs on the set because AJ won the title from Jarrett, which was extremely well handled, but this match wasn't their best work. It was still a good match, and like I said, it is special because AJ won the title. And they did some neat things with Tito Ortiz as the referee as well.

On a side note, after the match was over, they had Monty Brown in the ring helping Jarrett, and he had a mini staredown with AJ Styles. These two never wrestled one on one, and I'm sorry they didn't. They could have had an AWESOME match up.

- And no best of AJ DVD would be complete without the famous Unbreakable Triple Threat with Daniels and Joe for the X Division Championship. This match is one of the best in TNA history, and probably the definition of what the X Division should be (that and the first X Title match in 2002) This match can best be described as "Total Nonstop Action" as those three just busted their asses the entire match. And in one of the most amazing matches, AJ was victorious as he captured the X Division title for the fifth time. This was probably the best match on the set.

- This next match was AJ against Roderick Strong on the first Spike TV Impact. It was actually the very first match on the show, which makes it special. The match itself is basically just a squash as AJ dominated Strong, almost from the bell to bell, but it has historical significance.

- AJ Styles vs. Petey Williams from Genesis 2005 for the X Title. Now the match everybody remembers for this two was from Victory Road 2004, the first TNA PPV. This match kind of escapes me, as does this whole Genesis PPV, mainly because I wasn't really in a wrestling mood that day (this PPV took place the same day Eddie Guerrero passed away) But this was a very good match. There was one truly sick spot where Petey getman suplexed AJ from the apron to the security railing. That was insane. I was glad they put this on here. When I first saw it on the set, I was thinking "Why'd they put this on here" but I completely forgot that it really is a pretty damn good match up.

- We then move on to AJ's tag team run with Christopher Daniels. Their match with AMW for the tag team titles at Slammiversary 2006 is easily one of the greatest tag team matches in TNA history, and to be perfectly honest, it was my pick for TNA Match of the Year for 2006. I loved it. All of the matches these two teams had were awesome (New Year's Impact, Sacrifice 2006), but this one was exceptionally good. It was just really nice for a tag team feud to take center stage and be allowed to steal the show.

- And speaking of tag team feuds being allowed to steal the show, how about AJ & Daniels' feud with LAX? Of course one of those matches is included on the set. And this match was voted as the 2006 Match of the Year for TNA, and that was their Ultimate X Match at No Surrender 2006. It is definately one of the best Ultimate X matches TNA has ever done. It was amazing, and this feud was what put LAX on the map, and IMO, they have taken AMW's place as TNA's trademark Tag Team.

- The last match on the set is the X Division title match with Chris Sabin on Impact shortly after Bound for Glory 2006. It was also part of the Fight for the Right Tournament. Jeez, that match had a lot of the line. But this was an appropriate match to end with as it was AJ Styles' last big win as a babyface. Shortly after this he would go on a small losing streak, and then turned heel to do his awesome feud with Rhino. This match was pretty good, and I like seeing Sabin as a heel. He did pretty good in that role.

- And then there is one Bonus Match: AJ Styles vs. Ron Killings from NWA Wildside, with AJ & Andrew Thomas on commentary. This was actually a surprisingly good match. I expected AJ to be a bit of a spot monkey, and I've never liked Killings, but this was actually really good. And its always nice to see the wrestlers before they became big stars in the promotion. The Harris/Storm Indy match is one of the biggest reasons to pick up Best of AMW. It wouldn't this match up as high as that, but its still a nice little gem to have on the DVD.

So, the Best of AJ Styles Vol. 2 is a really good collection. We'll probably get a Vol. 3 someday, but to be honest, it is really hard to get all of AJ's best work to make a complete Best of DVD. He's had so many great matches in TNA, its impossible to put them all in, but this was a very nice collection, with some of AJ's best work, and a few nice matches that I kind of forgot about. This is definately worth picking up, and if you already have Vol. 1, then you've got yourself a pretty nice collection on one of TNA's best stars.

Match Rankings:

1) AJ vs. Joe vs. Daniels: Unbreakable 2005
2) AJ/Daniels vs. AMW: Slammiversary 2006
3) AJ vs. Abyss: Six Sides of Steel at Lockdown 2005
4) AJ/Daniels vs. LAX: Ultimate X at No Surrender 2006
5) AJ vs. Petey: Genesis 2005
6) AJ vs. Jarrett: Hard Justice 2005
7) AJ vs. Sabin: Impact 2006
8) AJ vs. Killings: Bonus Match
9) AJ vs. Strong: Impact 2005

anyone know how Steiner/Joe II is? it's a UWF/TNA show, I'm intrigued in this because the first Steiner/Joe and their feud overall was really good stuff.

also of all the UWF/TNA co-promoted shows, which one is the best?

^^^ I only saw one and that was The Hardcore War in the ECW Arena. That show was incredible. It could have easily been a PPV. If I recall correctly, the card was:

Team 3D vs. The James Gang vs. AMW in a "Good Ol' Fashioned Philly Muthafuckin' Streetfight" as Bubba put it.
Joe vs. Daniels vs. AJ for the X Title
Abyss vs. Brother Runt
Jeff Jarrett vs. Rhino
Sonjay Dutt vs. Jay Lethal

I think there were 1 or 2 other matches on there, but they escape me right now. But the card was really good. The matches were damn good, but the energy from the crowd and some of the promos were what gave it its life.

Like I said its the only UWF-TNA show I've seen, but I find it hard to believe that any show could have topped it.

It's really good. It is so vastly different from the usual TNA product that its definately worth a look. Its a very different flavor from what TNA fans are used to seeing on thursday nights.

The interview segments and press conferences before and after the matches are cool. We get to see just how different the handling of Japanese wrestling is to American wrestling. They treat it like its a real sport, and there is very little "sports entertainment" (at least when compared to the states)

At the end of the DVD, they feature a few quick segments of the wrestlers getting accustomed to Japanese culture and going to restaurants and such. It's pretty neat, but nothing of great interest happens. It's just cool to see the wrestlers hanging out and being themselves.

The matches:

AJ Styles, Christian Cage, & Petey Williams vs. Minoru, Prince Devitt, & Milano Collection AT - It was a good X Division-esque match. All the TNA guys hit their big spots, and the action was pretty good throughout. Of all the TNA vs. New Japan matches from this show, this one was the best choice to have open things up.

Christopher Daniels vs. Wateru Inoue (pronounced In-o-way) for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship - Pretty good match up. If you want to see Daniels performing at the level he was back in 2006, then check this match out as he was really given the chance to shine here.

Abyss vs. Manabu Nakanishi - Alot of people seem to hate this match, but I kind of enjoyed it. Short but sweet is the best way to describe it. There was some good big man action here. I really like Nakanishi.

Team 3D vs. Togi Makabe & Toru Yano in a Hardcore Match - This was another cool match. They incorporated ladders and tables, and it was pretty fun to watch. This is probably my least favorite match on the set, but its still worth a look.

The Steiner Brothers vs. Tomko & Giant Bernard for the IWGP Tag Team Titles - I really liked this match! This was tons of fun and to be honest it was the major reason I picked up the DVD (aside from Angle/Nagata of course) There were some great power moves, and Scotty broke out The Frankensteiner. There were also run ins from Makabe, Yano, and Jeff Jarrett. It was a really fun match.

Kurt Angle vs. Yuji Nagata for the IWGP Championship (3rd Belt) If you saw the Global Impact special, then you saw this match. The DVD presents it just as they did in the Global Impact special, even segmented to account for commercial breaks, which was kind of disappointing, but it was still a hell of a match. Awesome bout.

-One minor knock I have on the DVD as a whole is that the main menu is divided into five sections (I believe its Pre Match, Matches, Angle vs. Nagata, Post Match, and Culture) but there is no "Play All" option. Oh well.

But yeah if you are interested in this DVD, then definately pick it up. If you're a TNA fan, its great to see the TNA stars in a very different setting. If you are a fan of Japanese wrestling, then this is a good representation of what Pro wrestling is like over in the land of the rising sun.

but im htinkin of getting that DVD and Best of Styles vol. 2 very soon

I don't have a lot of TNA DVD's but these are the ones I have

TNA Destination X: 2005 (this is imo a fun ppv. mostly for the final assault match, ultimate x challenge, & main event between DDP & JJ)

TNA Slammiversary: 2005 (ehh. thought this would be better. but its still a good watch. short but entertaining opening 6 way x division matchup, decent three way x title match w/ bentley, daniels, and sabin. also KOTM was brutal and very entertaining)

Best of the X-Division: (slef-explanatory. awesome awesome DVD. great matches from start to end)

Best of the X-Division Vol. 2: (holy friggin crap wat a DVD! twice as good as the first one. If you are a TNA fan wanting DVD's this is a must have for you. It takes you back to before BFG 05 and up to wen senshi won the gold in 07)

Best of the Bloodiest Brawls: (another awesome DVD. Both monsters balls. THe second one is one of my favorite TNA matches of all time. spectacular cage match between abyss and Styles. great house of fun match. the cage match between XXX and AMW is a classic as well as the barbed wire massacre.

TNA No Surrender 07: just 1 of my favorite ppv's of 2007 so i thought i'd pick it up. Great tag gauntlet, Joe vs. Cage match, Angle vs. Lethal, and Roode vs. Kaz match

TNA Best of AJ Styles Vol. 1: (this DVD is great as well. takes you back to the old days of TNA wrestling and gives you a chance to see the pioneers of the x-division go at it. The epic battles between lynn/senshi/ & Styles are must sees)
