Re: Official TNA DVD Help/Discussion/Review Thread
So I am currently watching Kurt Angle’s DVD and I will review each of his matches one by one. I am still not done with the entire DVD but o far I am impressed. Anyways here is the first match of his DVD.TNA PRESENTS
KURT ANGLE, CHAMPION
1. Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe (Genesis 2006)
This was the first match in the classic series between these two guys. This match was hyped as the dream match of the decade and I have to admit, to me this really was. This was Kurt Angle's TNA ppv debut. I still think that this is one of the biggest matches in TNA history.
Samoa Joe was undefeated for a year and a half up to this point. He had gone through everyone on the roster. Kurt Angle was a legend in the business and he was ready to make an Impact right here.
The story was that Samoa Joe stole the TNA world heavyweight championship and did not want to return it to Jarrett for his match with Sting at Bound For Glory. Angle came out and hit a huge head butt on Samoa Joe and then gave him the Olympic Slam. After this they started to brawl through a couple of Impact’s and even during the main event of Bound For Glory. The match was finally set in stone for Genesis.
So let’s get on to the match finally. Both men make their way to the ring and you can tell this match will be huge. The match starts of and even before they lock up the crowd starts chanting "This is Awesome".
At first Angle gets the control and even knocks Joe out of the ring with a clothesline. Everything changes though when Joe Pulls him out of the ring by grabbing his legs and then smashes him into the barricade with his head going in first. This move looked super sick.
Not too long after this Samoa Joe busts Angle open and Angle is bleeding like crazy. Samoa Joe just destroys the bloody Angle with some super stiff and vicious moves. Angle is just trying to survive this. He occasionally tries to make a comeback but it never lasts long.
In the last few minutes of the match both men exchange their finishers but are unable to put the other guy down for the count. They then try to make the other submit with their signature submission holds but that doesn’t work very well as well.
Finally Angle is able to hit a second Olympic Slam on Samoa Joe and then locks in another Ankle Lock on Joe in the middle of the ring. The crowd is going crazy and we finally see a historic moment happen as Samoa Joe taps out and loses his first match in his TNA career. The crowd goes wild.
Samoa Joe tries to shake hands and asks for a rematch but Angle refuses to shake hands and we see his first signs of turning heel. Well his face run was short.
Anyways this match was amazing. It was brutal, it was stiff, it had a wild crowd. The match really had a little bit of everything. My only problem with the match is that it was hyped up as this huge dream match and then we only see them going at it for 14 minutes. I know some people have said if they had 5 more minutes this match would have been one of the best in TNA history. Well I think if these two guys had just 2 more minutes than they got we could have seen one of the best matches in that TNA has had in the past few years.
This was a classic match. It was their shortest match together but those 14 minutes were just amazing. This rating is really the highest I could give it because of the time issue. I could watch this match again and again.
My match rating: ****
2. Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe (turning Point 2006)
This was their rematch. Angle said this was going to be the last time he stepped foot in the ring with Joe, no matter what. Like that was really going to work out like that. Anyways, this match gets a lot of praise. A lot of people call this their best match ever. Lets see if that is true or not.
So both men get to the ring and the introductions are done. It has that big match feel again. When the match started off, I noticed that the crowd wasn’t as crazy as they were during the first match. In the first match they were chanting "This is Awesome before they even looked up, but here it was going to take some work.
So both men start their match. The match is about 80 percent dominated by Kurt Angle actually. In the first match Samoa Joe just killed Angle and here Angle was dominating Joe. I found that kind of hard to believe. I would of liked it more if Joe was the monster here and not Angle because to me Samoa Joe works better as that killer monster, plus I like his move set more than Angle's.
the one thing that I really did like about the match though is that you could actually feel the hatred between them. When Joe was on the outside with Angle he just started going crazy with screaming and some super stiff punches.
So the first 15 minutes are both guys actually wrestling and doing different things to each other and than for the last ten minutes this turns into a "Ankle Lock vs Rear Naked Choke" competition. They start locking in their signature submissions and start countering them. So it was like this. Joe locks in his submission, then angle reverses into his own, than Joe reverses into his own again and so forth.
Some people might mind the submissions whoring but I didn’t. Its not like these guys were hitting the Muscle Buster and Angle slam on each other and kicking out the whole time. No, they were locked in a submission and they knew a counter for it. It didn’t really hurt the match at all in my eyes.
towards the end Angle starts to cheat by using a low blow and then he tries to use a chair on Samoa Joe. When he tries to use the chair he misses Joe and ends up hitting himself. Samoa Joe grabs him in the rear naked choke and makes Kurt Angle tap out.
I liked how this match was slowly turning Angle into a heel. He used a low blow, a steel chair, and gave some bitch slaps to Samoa Joe while they were on the outside. He really looked like an asshole here.
Overall this was a great match. It had some good things about it and some bad things. I can never seem to get into this match all that much though for some reason. Anyways, both guys busted their asses and gave us the TNA MOTY for the year 2006.
This is another classic match that you can add to their list. The only thing that I really didn’t like about it was that Joe was on the defensive the whole time pretty much. I also liked how they actually had to work to get the crowd in the match this time. They were not as crazy as the first time so both men had to give them something amazing that would really get them going. i think they did.
I thought I would be able to give this match a higher rating because of all the praise it gets but I re watched it 2 times and I keep getting the same rating so that is what i will use. Still though, this is an amazing match.
My match ratings: ****1/4
