I bought Best of 09 yesterday for 20 dollars, and it was in widescreen, but that is the Australian supplier's version, don't know if the other versions will be.
Some ratings and thoughts for Best of 09:
Alissa Flash vs Sarita (Impact, both women's debut): **1/2
This was a good Impact match, but KO match of the year? Not by a long shot. I can remember another Impact match, between Sarita and Hamada, which was great, and much better than this. Still, a good match.
AJ Styles vs Kurt Angle (Impact, Tables Match): ***1/4
Again, a good Impact match, but short (about 10 minutes on DVD, ad break is cut out) for these two. Making it 'Tables Are Legal' like ROH does and having pinfall/submission but with tables allowed would have been nice. The finishing spot is great though, the table splintered dangerously. Good match for TV, would have preferred their pre-BFG match instead, that match was the true 'Impact MOTY'.
Sting vs Kurt Angle (Impact, Empty Arena match): **
Tough to rate, more of an angle than a match, but it's a decent, overly long brawl around the building. Angle's bump over the guardrail onto some chairs, and then his fall from the stands are two highlights. The closing bit of the angle with the handshake/spit was intense. Grudge match of the year? No, but still and interesting segment to have on the DVD.
Kurt Angle vs Jeff Jarrett (Genesis, No DQ): ****1/2
Here we go! Now we have one of my favourite matches in TNA history, and probably my favourite JJ match ever. This is what I love about feuds, when they're done right, the crowd heat is there, and the intensity is up, they produce amazing matches like this. Their timing was great, the match was stiff and fast paced, and there are some great spots to go along with the storytelling, like a sick bell shot, a near-death experience when Jarrett does a no hands plancha, the crazy Angle Slam off the stage, and the hot finish. A fantastic match.
Amazing Red vs Suicide vs Homicide vs Daniels vs Chris Sabin vs Alex Shelley (Bound For Glory V, Ultimate X): ****
I remember seeing this match when it happened and thinking how good a way it was to start the PPV, but it was so good that it could have easily burnt the crowd out, luckily it didn't. This is one of my favourite UX matches, the action is typically nonstop, and everything is hit cleanly, and the innovation is there. Great fun, and an easy watch, apart from the scary Suicide/Daniels bump. That bump and the lead up to it was incredible drama, with the crowd riding every teased spot, and the 'please don't die' chants.
AJ Styles vs Sting (Bound For Glory V): ***3/4
I really liked this match, and I know many were dissapointed by it. I loved the leadup, it really felt important, and I liked the pure wrestling match story they worked, with respect for each other. The wrestling itself was really top notch, the best stuff Sting's done in a long time, and typical AJ. The only problem I had was the finish. Had Sting have kicked out, and then been put away by the Styles Clash, I would have given this 4 stars. That aside, this is a great match.
Kurt Angle vs Desmond Wolfe (Turning Point): ****1/2
What a great wrestling match. This is, as someone previously put it, a clinic. The crowd is great for this, counting along with Angle's germans, chanting for both, and calling for both men to tap out at various points. Both guys are great wrestlers, and they work a simple, yet awesome story of Angle's ankle lock not working, Wolfe having his offense scouted, and the arm work on Angle. The finish is perfect, Angle makes Wolfe tap out to a hold he's never used before, so therefore Wolfe hasn't seen before, making his study worthless at that point, and he taps out. The crowd said it right: this is wrestling.
AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe vs Daniels (Turning Point): ****3/4
Can't wait to rewatch this in a week or something. This is all out, balls to the wall action for almost 25 minutes, just like their Unbreakable match. I mark out for all 3, so this is a treat. Basically, I dare you to show this to any wrestling fan, and they will enjoy it, guarenteed. That's the bottom line.
OVERALL: 8/10
A really good DVD, contains 4 **** and above matches, plus some other good matches. For the length and price of a regular PPV DVD (or less for me), this is great, as long as you don't have any of these PPVs already.
