Re: Official TNA DVD Help/Discussion/Review Thread
Against All Odds 2008 was pretty good. Not amazing, but it was a MAJOR improvement over 2007, which I hold up as one of TNA's worst PPVs.
AJ Styles/Tomko vs. BG James/Bullet Bob: Tag Titles - Better than I expected, but still not that great. Bob actually looked more motivated than his son in this match. Sad. The finish was really cool, but that's about it for this one.
Traci Brooks vs. Payton Banks - Solid & fun brawl between the two girls.
Scott Steiner vs. Petey Williams; Winner Gets Both Feast or Fired Cases - Very good match up. Its probably one of my more favorite undercard matches from a TNA PPV this year. I like watching Steiner interact with X Division guys as he meshes with them well.
Eric Young vs. James Storm: TNA Drinking Championship - Good solid match with the return of Rhino making for a nice moment.
Awesome Kong vs. ODB: Knockout Title - I thought this was a really good power match between the two girls. Alot of people seemed to be hard on it, but I really liked it.
Abyss vs. Judas Messias: Barbedwire Massacre - Unfortunately the match was taped about a week prior during the Impact tapings because the SC sports commission or something wouldn't allow the match to take place in their venue. It's not as memorable as the 1st BWM, but still a really good and violent match.
Booker T vs. Robert Roode - A good intense matchup. These two could have stolen the show at a PPV if they were ever given the oppurtunity just because the feud was so intense. But this match was really good. I won't give it away, but you might not like the finish. I didn't have a problem with it, but most people did.
Jay Lethal & The Guns vs. Team 3D & Devine: Streetfight (X Title & Future of X Division up for Grabs) - This was a really good match up and a strong performance from Jay Lethal who came off like a real hero in this one. I think some people overrate it, but it still a highlight of the show.
Kurt Angle vs. Christian Cage: World Title - Awesome match. It's about on par with their FR08 match and WAY better than their match at AGA 07. Having Joe as enforcer added a little bit as well. Strong main event.
Like I said, the show was really good. The main event was the standout match, and most overthing else was pretty good. The weakest match was the opener, and even that was ok for what it was. X Title, Knockout Title, Petey/Steiner, Barbedwire Massacre, & Booker/Roode were all pretty good match ups and it made for an action filled show.
1) Angle vs. Cage
2) Petey vs. Steiner (some might say I'm overrating, but I really liked this match)
3) Lethal/Guns vs. Team 3D
4) Abyss vs. Judas
5) Booker vs. Roode
6) Kong vs. ODB
7) Young vs. Storm
8) Traci vs. Payton
9) AJ/Tomko vs. Bob/BG
Destination X 2008 was nothing too special overall, but it had some really good matches, and nothing terrible.
Opener of LAX vs. The Guns vs. Rock & Rave was a very action packed and exciting match up. If you love highspots, and crazy X Division action, then you'll enjoy this quite a bit.
Jay Lethal vs. Petey Williams for the X Title, IMO, is one of the better X Title matches of 2008. It's probably second only to Kaz/Petey from Slammy. Very good match.
Kaz & Eric Young vs. Black Reign & Rellik - Solid tag team match. Kaz & Young were able to make it fun, and this was the debut of Super Eric, which actually came off well.
Awesome Kong vs. Gail Kim vs. ODB: Knockouts Title - One of the better Knockout title matches since the creation of the division. It was very good.
Curry Man & Shark Boy vs. Team 3D: Fishmarket Streetfight - Team 3D was doing the weight in thing (which sucked because there is NO WAY they are under 300lbs!) As for the match, you really have to be a fan of comedy matches to appreciate it. I'm a person who actually enjoyed the 4 Doinks vs. Bam Bam's Team from Survivor Series 1993, so I thought this match was a hoot. However, if you don't like comedy matches, then just skip over this.
Roode vs. Booker: Strap Match - Roode & Booker had Payton & Traci in their corners respectively, and the loser's valet would have to get whipped. The match itself was a little short, but still solid. Its what happened after the match that really got my attention. I honestly thought it was one of Robert Roode's best heel moments. So if you didn't like the match, or thought it was too short, I think what happened afterwards made up for it.
Rhino vs. James Storm: Elevation X - EX is the most dangerous match ever and its scary to watch. It's not as memorable as the AJ/Rhino match from the year before, and they tried to copycat some of the spots, so this isn't anything too special. Thankfully nobody was hurt, and to be honest, I hope they never do this match again.
Samoa Joe, Christian Cage, Kevin Nash vs. Kurt Angle, AJ Styles, Tomko: For a tag team main event this one was pretty good. The Angle Alliance went into the match at a 3-2 disadvantage for the 1st 5 minutes via losing the Best of 3 Series on the previous Impact. THere are some good segments during the PPV where Angle, AJ, & Tomko dispute the decision since in the final match (Cage/Angle SSOS) it looked as if Angle actually won & not Christian. In the end, Cornette opted to not reverse the decision.
Having them at a disadvantage made for a great moment where all the men got knocked out except for Joe, and he was able to confront Angle one on one as he made his way down to the ring. Basically this whol ematch was set up to build to Joe vs. Angle at Lockdown, and it provided some good action, so for a tag team main event, it was actually pretty good.
Destination X 2008 is not an amazing show, but still enjoyable. I'd say its about on par with Against All Odds. Neither show will ever get ranked up as two of TNA's best ever, but I don't think anybody would regret watching them.
1) Lethal vs. Petey
2) LAX vs. MCMG vs. R&R
3) Joe/Nash/Christian vs. Angle Alliance
4) Kong vs. Gail vs. ODB
5) Booker vs. Roode
6) Curry/Sharky vs. Team 3D
7) Kaz/Young vs. Reign/Rellik
8) Elevation X
