According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it appears that Anthem Sports & Entertainment will drop the TNA initials and call the company Impact Wrestling.
The belief is that the name “TNA” has a negative connotation and Anthem wants to move away from that. Other slight changes are expected to be made as Anthem settles into the company as the new owners.
Took long enough. They've had a brand identity crisis for the last couple years by using two names. Once this is confirmed we'll change the section name.
Didn't they try this years ago? And people still referred to it as TNA? Seriously, if you want to rebrand, you need a brand new name. Impact Wrestling has the "TNA" stench attached to it.
People will still call it TNA. Most casuals don't even know what Impact Wrestling is but heard the name TNA. I am not sure if this is the best move, but we'll see.
The Impact brand has been around since 2004, so it's nothing entirely new and it sounds kinda cool.
That's a good decision, considering the acronym does not do it for the current times. There's something they need now and I've been waiting for them to pull the trigger for ages. They need a new name for their main TV show. It's funny how they had Xplosion, but the main show was called the same as the company. Now that this identity crisis is done with Anthem settling on Impact Wrestling, it's time to give the show its own name.
I dont know if it would be a bad move to go with one of the companies old names.I mean we already see jeff bring back Open fight night which is old but fun great concept.
So in my opion they should call the show "REACTION" Reaction is a perfect name for a wrestling show. The entire show is about reactions from the fans and wrestlers.
Impact wrestling presents - thursday night reaction.
That's a stupid move and they're probably being advised by Dave Meltzer himself. If not directly then by reading his self-righteous newsletter.
Atm TNA has 3 valuable assets
1. the tape library
2. the TNA brand
3. The tv-deal with POP
Years and years goes into building a name and a brand. Casual wrestling fans know what TNA is even if they never watched it.....wrestling fans don't know what Lucha underground or ROH is...there is a lot of value just in the recognition factor.
Edit: AAANNNNNDD the other thing is that TNA world champion actually means something. There's credibility to that title. Global force world champion, Impact world champion or whatever crappy title they come up with will instantly lose ALL credibility. In one second it's gone and nobody cares about the title.
A name change would be a good move, but "Impact Wrestling" isn't really a change, and it's just as stigmatized, maybe moreso, than "TNA", due to the shitshow "Impact Wrestling" became in the wake of the Hogan/Bischoff era.
I echo the sentiments of the minority on here - I was not in favour of a name change. Even though the TNA name is tarnished, it's established. For all of the shortcomings of the company, they still get some publicity. Starting a new brand (or in this case resetting it completely), especially in this industry, is nigh-on impossible, see Jeff Jarrett and GFW. I don't think it will matter anyway because I can see them doing a u-turn on the idea in years to come, like with the whole 4 vs 6 side ring - I'm confident they'll go back to their roots (eventually).
