Can someone really explain this one to me? At the time in 09 he had won the "feat or fired" world title shot and at the time the MEM angle was going on. This storyline particularly writes itself with Hernandez being this underdog original who was putting on great matches in the x-division/tag teams in the early days of TNA is now the one to "save TNA" from the Mafia and get the rub of betting this stable full of WWE/WCW stars. The storyline would of worked and it could of created a star which TNA gets crap for not doing. But instead they have him cash in on Sting some random night which ended in a dq plus he never got a rematch. Can someone explain this one to me because they where clearly getting behind him at the time?
After Victory Road TNA tried to push AJ, Morgan and Hernandez simultaneously (and failed miserably to do it in an effective way). Hernandez was only third on the totem pole behind AJ and Morgan, Morgan was probably seen as a better big man since he could talk.
I was actually a huge Hernandez fan at the time and absolutely loved it when he got the champ briefcase. I loved LAX and they were building him solid. They brought him out to cash in on Sting. It was solid. Then randomly I think an incredibly well placed towel throw from Booker T landed on Hernandez's face and they beat him up.
It was then a triple threat for the World Title. AJ Styles Vs Kurt Angle Vs Matt Morgan. Morgan was also really well build at the time too. Hernandez came out to cash in. It was looking awesome. Odds were, we were getting a brand new original champion coming out of no where to be a legit force in TNA.
Instead, Morgan lost the match and even worse so, Eric Young came out instantly and power bombed Hernandez on the ramp. They instead relegated Hernandez to a less important World Elite storyline and he phased back into a boring guy.
Hernandez could have been a legit interesting guy at the time, and Morgan was really interesting. Unfortunately they went with ex-WWE guys instead and we never really got to see either near the top again.
The real question being why the made him Mr. Money In The Bank in the first place. TNA seem to never use that briefcase effectively. I think successful cash-ins for the World title 0 out of 5 now or something.
They need a good Latino World Champion though. I mean, am I missing somebody or is Tigre Uno their only talent from Latin America? I guess Hector Guerrero counts though, so there is that.
If he was protected and booked right to hide his weaknesses, he could've been a solid champion imo (under those circumstances only) but I wouldn't expect much as his singles pushes always went kinda "meh"
There were so many guys in front of Hernandez to be a better World Champion at that time. Hell, even Matt Morgan impressed me for the first time with his series of matches against AJ.
Very disappointed the feud with Homicide wasn't better. That would've been a nice way to get Hernandez the TV Title. And I still don't understand the point of the Feast or Fired briefcase. I like the firing part but not the MITB briefcase rip-off.
