Default Computer Keeps Turning Off.

Lately my computer has been turning off randomly. It will turn itself off, then I will turn it on again and it will immediately bring back up what I was doing and I can go on like normal, for about a minute. Then it shuts off again. If I completely turn off my comp and restart it, it stops. It will do this, not do it for 4-5 days and then do it again. Nothing is overheating, I can see the temps of everything in my comp and nothing is over 55 C. What could this be?

Usually when this happens to me, it's because of heat. Can you provide a snapshot of the CPU (all cores) temperatures?

I know you said you don't think it's a heat issue, but it's good to rule it out completely. Also, it might be a bad master hard drive, do you have another drive with an OS installed that you can test?

These temps were the same when it turned off, I usually have this up. I don't have another drive, unfortunately.

have you made any recent hardware changes?

Also, if you start the machine in safe mode, does it shut down after the same amount of time elapses?

I haven't made any changes, no. I haven't tried restarting it in safe mode. This goes in a pattern, I've noticed. It won't happen for days, happen once. Then I will turn the comp back on, it will be on for a minute, turn off again. Then when I completely restart it from the back instead of it doing it itself, it stops and then won't do it for days. Like today, zero issues. This is kinda odd. I unplugged everything from the back, re-plugged it in, figure maybe something was a little loose, wasn't that as it did it again last night.

It's tricky diagnosing what the exact cause of something like this is. It could really be anything (well not ANYTHING, but incredibly hard to pinpoint).

I'm still not 100% sold on it "definitely not" being heat related. I mean, 55 degrees is pretty hot to consistently run at for a processor. And it might have been running that hot or even hotter for a while before these shut downs started.

Best bet here is to disconnect all non-essential devices, and leave the minimal amount of ram in the system to see if you get the random shut downs.

I'd also suggest a memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/

I would even do a quick virus/spyware scan (you can find my step-by-step in the stickied spyware thread) just to rule that out.

At the end of the day, I personally have a hard time diagnosing issues without the machine in front of me, but I'll do my best to help you out. And maybe there's someone else here who could diagnose it for you if I cant

I ran a spyware/antivirus after it happened the first time, it was the first thing that I forgot to do. If it was overheating, would it not constantly overheat? This is the tricky part. One would assume if it was an overheating issue it would continuously do it. I don't understand how it can overheat (if thats the issue), get turned on immediately again and then have no issues for days on end.

You make good points...the only thing I can really think of would be to do a fresh re-install of the OS, but that's a REALLY drastic measure.

I'd probably bet that if it ISN'T a heat issue, it's definitely failing hardware. Likely RAM, CPU, Motherboard, Power Supply, and possibly the Video card (in that order)...which is why I'd check the RAM when I have a chance.

I have more to add on this, I'll post when I get home from work with additional steps.

Edit: dammit...I'm home but my laptop is having issues. I'll get to more details tomorrow. Sorry
