Blu-ray successor plan unveiled by Sony and Panasonic

Sony and Panasonic have announced plans for a successor to Blu-ray discs.

The firms say they want to develop an optical disc capable of holding at least 300 gigabytes of data by the end of 2015.

By contrast, normal dual-layer Blu-rays can only hold up to 50GB.

Sony has previously said that 4K ultra-high-definition movies - which offer four times the resolution of 1080p video - were likely to take up more than 100GB of space.

It recently launched a device that allows 4K films to be streamed over the internet, but that will be impractical for people with slow internet access or accounts with data-use limits.

I don't think the Blu-Ray has made into every house yet and they're already pushing for a new one. I mean everything is still released on the DVD, the lesser medium, still. It would have been like launching the Blu-Ray and expecting it to sell well when the VCR had as many, if not more users than the DVD.

Its HD DVD/Blu Ray all over again.

Don't think this is necessary yet but whatever.

wasn't trying too. Blu Ray isn't that old of a technology but I guess if something better comes along so be it.

Re: Blu-ray successor plan unveiled by Sony and Panasonic

If I had a shit load of cash, I'd be all over this.
I don't.

But what it will mean is 4K blu-ray with either 4k special features or standard HD features.
At this rate, the special features themselves will have HD sound.

This has me excited purely at the thought of future game companies creating a game on said 300GB discs.

As far as video quality goes, I am thoroughly satisfied with 1080p.
