Looking for an opinion on a choice of processors.

Ok so i'm looking to order an Alienware X51 this weekend, now i know they are overpriced etc but idc i'm ordering it, but that's not what this is about.

I have a choice of processors with it:

i5 4430
i7 4770

Now i know the i7 is superior but it's 200 more just to have it, my question to you is do i need it? i will be using the system for movies, games, maybe a little Photoshop and maybe some coding but my laptop will be primarily for a

Do i need the i7 or should i stick with the i5? because i think it's more of a want than need.

It sounds to me like you already know the answer to this but just need confirmation. the i5 processer should be able to handle games and photoshop okay, provided the rest of the hardware is up to task, and you can always upgrade later on, when the technology has gone down in price and is a more viable option. I've looked at the performance of both processors and tbh I don't think the gains are enough to warrant that much of an increase in expenditure.

I would go for the i5 personally. For what you're gonna be using it for the extra money doesn't justify the benefits you'll get.

Re: Looking for an opinion on a choice of processors.

wait, theyre charging 200 extra for an i7? I cant understand why they charge so much. I bought an i7 for around 200 dollars for my custom build. I dont see why the fuck theyre charging that much in PRICE DIFFERENCE.

If you know nothing about assembling computers, then go with alienware, and the i5. BUT, if you have an idea what you're doing, dont give dell money you could be spending on other shit...and build a computer for maybe 70% of the price you're going to pay through Alienware.

I have no doubt you could save a considerable amount by just buying the same specs from a different retailer and paying for them to assemble it.

OP already preempted that response and stated he was ordering the alienware comp. regardless.

Re: Looking for an opinion on a choice of processors.

Yeah i didn't want this to turn into an Alienware is overpriced issue, i know they are, but they look nice and i like the brand so i'll be getting it.

I've built my own system in the past so i do know how to build them and how i can build it for less but i cba to that this time.

I appreciate the responses, i've done some research myself and i'll probably grab the i5 at this stage and look to get the Haswell i7 closer to the end of teh year and upgrade it.

Cheers, i'll need to spread some rep about but i'll send some loving your way.

ffs, i wasnt trying to turn this into an "Alienware is overpriced" thread...calm down, Bully.

I was simply stating that if he had an idea on how to assemble a computer, he could get what he wanted for a significantly smaller price tag.

Re: Looking for an opinion on a choice of processors.

To be honest this thread is very pointless. The fact that you already know your paying more just for the name while could pay less and get equal or better performance and then actually care about the price vs performance on just the cpu is quite hypocritical.

Here is a direct comparison of the two and take the information how ever you please.
