It's not pointless at all, the thread was about the question "do i need a certain processor for the tasks i'm running?", this was answered; i needed to know if the i5 was up to the job of what i need it for thus saving me £200.

Thanks for the link, but not the attitude.

Still pointless and really no attitude. You want peoples opinions on those cpu's then leave it at all. Don't include alienware, overpriced, dont care still getting, etc. Simply saying your tasks will be gaming, movies, photoshop is pretty generic. Pretty much any I5 these days can do that. In fact many I3's can do all that even.

Gaming seems like its your biggest task and that is going to depend on the rest of the hardware like BULLY mentioned and the level of games that you intend to play. Games on the market currently you should be fine with no problem cpu wise. The upgrade later of it like BULLY mentioned as well would be a good option especially since you have done your own builds before. That way you could look for a different cpu instead of the i7 4770 as it clearly lacks the performance gains to its price over the i5.

You shoulda replied like this in the first place, it's more appreciated; the reason i mentioned i know Alienware is overpriced because i've seen multiple threads derailed over that instead of the actual question asked.

The rest of the hardware is decent for what i need, it is just for leisure and free time, not for work or anything really; it's just the processor that i was debating, i've gone with the i5 because like you stated the extra power the i7 has isn't worth the increase in price at this stage.

Thanks.

Re: Looking for an opinion on a choice of processors.

I know this thread has been answered but I want to point out certain things.
i7 have more cache (good for repetitive tasks),hyper-threading (faster multitasking), and more clock speed (good for CPU-intensive tasks). i7's have an advantage for processor intensive applications. Games, Photoshop and coding IDE's are processor intensive. So there is a definite advantage for you in i7 but for 200 extra? If I were you I would rather go for an i5 processor.
Short answer: If you have enough money to spare go for i7 but no real need for an i7.
Happy shopping
