Waterproof phones and tablets make a splash

http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/04/tech/m...html?hpt=te_t1

Consumer electronics and water don't mix, and for many, there are few things more nerve-racking than a smartphone or tablet that's been accidentally doused.

"I can't tell you how many people I know who've accidentally dropped their phone in the toilet, or their kid spilled their juice box all over it," CNET senior writer Maggie Reardon told CNN.

for now, the solution is companies like lifeproof. The only problem is, they only cater to iOS devices.

Haha. This is what I thought.

Do we really need a waterproof-specific phone/tablet or do people just need to be more careful?

Apart from reading in the bath, which is never actually necessary, I can't think of an actual need for a waterproof phone or tablet.

If it's raining, keep it out of the way. If you're around water, keep it out of the way. If you're leaning over a toilet, don't drop it in the toilet.

Either all phones and gadgets should be waterproof or all phones and gadgets should come with an information and instruction guide on How not to be an idiot.

I'm an idiot because I've water-damaged multiple phones, and apart from WISHING it was water-proof so I wouldn't lose anything and have to replace it, I have accepted that I was being an idiot in water damaging my phone.

It has nothing to do with being stupid. Accident happen. We already have unscratchable and unbreakable screens, might as well have a waterproof phone while we're at it.

Re: Waterproof phones and tablets make a splash

ok, first of all, the glass on phones isnt unbreakable or unscratchable.

Gorilla glass is VERY resilient, and VERY resistant to breaking, but impact in the right spot CAN and WILL break the glass.

As for the *need* for a waterproof phone, I don't think it's at the top of the priority list. The ONLY problem with cases like lifeproof is that they increase the size/form factor of the phone. I think there are other things that these companies could be spending time on aside from waterproofing their phones...like, say, FUCKING BATTERY LIFE.
