Default Memory Stick Problem

Right OK, I have a memory stick that I regularly use to transfer files between home and work. Been using it for well over a year now, never had any issues with it before. Today however, I plugged into my laptop as usual and all the files on the stick are now blank, yet Windows still says there is date on the stick. In the picture below you'll see the stick called NANO PRO:

Looks fine yeah? But then, when you open the stick, all the files within are showing 0 bytes. For instance, this is the backup folder for all the old BTB shows I have posted:

And this is repeated for every file on the stick. The name and file show up, but each and every one of them is now blank. Word docs, excel files, pdfs, powerpoints, even the lone mp4 file I had, they're all blank.

Now, at about half 9 this morning I gave my memory stick to a work colleague so she could put a file on the stick that I needed. I fear she may have given me a virus. But, the file I needed was taken off my stick and put onto my work computer no problem. So I dunno how that would work yet it would wipe all my files.

Further info. Computer's at work are windows 7, same as my laptop. However, today I was working on a stand alone Linux computer that isn't hooked up to my work's network. Could the change in OS have anything to do with it?

Anybody know if there's any way to salvage this situation?

Ok, so this problem seems to be a little weird. What makes you think your colleague gave you a virus? If it was a simple transfer of a file, I doubt that would have corrupted the drive. First question I have here is this; are you able to get this inserted into another machine to see if the same thing happens on multiple computers?

I'd start there, and then if that doesnt work, I'd try connecting it to the linux machine at work the first chance you get to see if the files open there. Because it looks like they are being recognized on some level, because the drive shows it has space being used.

Let me know what these attempts yield.

Tried on my gf's laptop (also Windows 7) and same result. Will try it on the Linux in work on Monday morning and see if that brings any joy.

EDIT - Oops, double post.

That's fucked up. scan the disk for any problems maybe, or take one file from you memory stick and open it from the desktop. Not as good as Ziggler mark for sure, but that's messed up.

Oh yeah, my bad forgot to respond.

So, I plug the stick into the Linux and hey presto, the files are back again. So I take it out the Linux and plug it into the Windows nearby... empty again. But I did a bit of Goggling to try find out what was going on, and it turns out it was because I put all the files on the stick into a new folder while it was in the Linux the day I gave to my colleague that's caused the problem.

Apparently it's something to do with the way Linux writes files to disk that they are read differently by Windows. So last night I went home, plugged the stick into my Windows laptop, told it to show all hidden files, and there the where, each file was on the stick as a .chk file. I downloaded some software that helped me figure out which file was which as they had all been renamed 0001.chk, 0002.chk, etc.

But yeah, sorted it eventually. Won't be making any new folders next time the stick goes into the Linux though.

Still not understanding why Linux would cause this issue. Devices like these work just fine for me in multiple environments. Are you doing a safe removal of this drive? Because it seems to me like those are corrupted files.

I don't claim to understand it fully myself. All I can tell you is that those files and folders where created on Windows. They were moved to a different folder on Linux. When moved back again in Windows, they were blank and in hidden files in .chk format.

Sorry, I know I'm not explaining this well at all, I'm just glad everything is back to normal now and I have my files back.
