Is it worth buying a Blackberry Playbook as a cheap tablet?

I've been looking for something inexpensive to replace my current tablet, which finally gave up on digital life. It doesn't need to be anything amazing my phone has pretty much everything covered that I need when mobile it only has to be good enough for reading ebooks and toting around media files I want to use away from home.

I was thinking of picking up a 7-inch, 64gb Blackberry Playbook I saw for $150 CND. The biggest attraction for me aside from the cheapness is that it's keyboard compatible, since I wouldn't mind being able to use it as a very mini laptop instead of lugging around one of my behemoth-sized work ones. I also saw a 9-inch low end brand tablet at, I think, Walmart, for around $120 CND. It's a bigger screen, and closer to the 10-inch I have now, but I read on my phone all the time so it isn't like I need the extra inches. Then again, if reading is the main use it gets, maybe the size is a major plus. It isn't keyboard compatible, thou, and it lacks the quality extras of the Blackberry, but it's Android as opposed to RIMs software.

Or is there something better suited to my needs that comes low cost? I almost grabbed an ipad since I'm familiar with it, but I'd rather not waste money on Apple brand for no purpose. I'd poke around for a deal online but I can't be bothered waiting for someone to ship it here and would rather just grab one at a store tomorrow.

Never heard of it, but I'll look for that when I'm out today. Does it sell in stores or is it an online purchase only? I'm rather impatient and sort of want to pick up a replacement for mine right away. I'll probably end up with the Playbook, just because of the quality for the price, but I'll keep that one in mind too.

I would, but it's been a slow month for me financially (I work on contract), and I like getting my hands on an electronic bargain that I won't be afraid to rip open if it give me troubles. I managed to get my Chinese import Innovatek back from brickdom twice by going in with my toolkit and messing around. I love the challenge of getting less popular stuff to work the way I want it too.

I've got a 9-inch Hipstreet Flare sitting her unopened that I'm debating keeping. Looking at the specs thou, I don't see much there I can work with to justify the $100 price.

Go for the Playbook, Excellent tab. Price/Quality is better then others. Just check some reviews on Youtube. It gets high ratings.

I just picked up a galaxy note 10.1. While the price is higher than what you're looking for, it's a great purchase. I haven't even scratched the surface of what I'm going to use it for, but I already am madly in love with it

Re: Is it worth buying a Blackberry Playbook as a cheap tablet?

I did end up buying the Playbook. With BB10 on the way, the old tablet is discontinued so I got it, plus the bluetooth keyboard (needed), case, charging stand, HDMI cable, stylus (for graphics editing on the go) and a ton of really useful apps for a little over $200 combined. For my needs, a good deal. Plus, now that RIM updated the OS, it's simple to side load Android apps and games, so I'm not really doing without anything.

The Galaxy Note is terrific, but also $500 here. Maybe if I really fall in love with the idea of doing any sort of high end work on a tablet it'd be something I'd consider for the future. I'm more of a power user for laptops than tabs.

They're good tablets. The screens on them are great the only problem is support. I thought RIM were going to cut it lose seeing as they cut the costs so much but its rumored/confirmed a 3G model is on the way at a massively higher price than what they're going for at the moment.
