Choosing a good portable hard drive

So I've been looking into buying a portable hard drive. I've set my eyes on a Western Digital 1TB My Passport drive. ( I'm just looking for some reviews on it.

I've searched for reviews of this drive, and WD drives in general, and they all seem to say it's a good, reliable product, but some say it's a piece of shit. I'm just wondering if it's reliable. Is it something that will last me for years? (providing it's treated right) Because some reviews say it will, but some say it died in 6 months or under. Nothing of a really high importance will be held on it, It's just mostly to hold video files which are taking up a lot of space on my computer at the moment, and my collection of pictures/graphics, and to cut down on the number of flash drives I have laying around.

Re: Choosing a good portable hard drive

ok, my brother lives in Japan and got a 1 TB portable HDD (usb powered!) for my parents. It's a I-D Data HDPS-U

it's a lot of japanese websites. You might be able to find it somewhere, sorry I cant be more helpful. It's super small and light.

Re: Choosing a good portable hard drive

do you specifically a portable external HDD? If not, you could always do what I did. Buy a hybrid SSD/Platter laptop drive, and put it into an external enclosure that has a USB interface. Mine winds up being incredibly low-profile, and suits the task I need it for (portable storage for my movies/music/backups)

Re: Choosing a good portable hard drive

I have one of Western Digital's internal Raptor drives that has failed on me twice now. Used only as an OS boot drive nothing was really lost both times. They were very easy to work with for warranty/service and they were quick. Sometimes no matter which company you go with you just happen to get the bad luck of the draw and get a defective drive. WD at least has shown to me they back their product so I've had no reason to stop using their products.
