I don't like AVG much. I'm using Unthreat Antivirus, it's isn't as well known but it's easy to use and I haven't had a virus since I downloaded it so I'm a happy camper!

Kaspersky has a bloated reputation built around false positives i am a hobby coder.Often it detects my harmless programs as malicious. Its like a news channel that blows a new item out of proportion or makes up stories to gain more viewership and to boost tv ratings.

I have Avast. It is the one most popular right now. But it is only free for a year. What do you people do after the year is up?
Everyone I know, after a year, went from Avast to AVG. All of them are relatively satisfied with it.
I have been reading some bad things Microsoft Security Essentials. One dude had installed it and then he said he had to uninstall it because his computer wasn't even able to perform simple functions.

I've been using free avast for years, never had a problem unless i've done something stupid, using paid AVG my computer had to be reset to factory defaults because AVG doesn't seem to catch anything.

This. The problem with A/V's is they try to be a solve all solution when it isn't always smart or even necessary. I forgot trojans, viruses and malware existed because I don't open nor browse anything that hasn't been 1) Tested in a VM and/or Sandboxie 2.) Isn't from a site/person I trust.

Heh, that's pretty lame. I've been using NOD32 for many years now and don't have much fear of clicking on pages I know for a fact have viruses. Even before NOD, I was having to delve into the registry and delete files many times to remove the things manually. (Finding Unlocker a bit later helped considerably by reducing the number of restarts.)

I don't think that solely going by "trust" teaches you much. My diagnosing skills came from risks. It's strange to not have to take them anymore with the comfort that your AV will actually find and kill it before it buries itself too deep for AV's growing immensly during 2003-2005 AV like Avast or ZoneAlarm to find. What you've described doesn't sound like a problem anymore than a configuration issue.

If anyone wants an idea of how bad AVG is, read this post. So I had a co-worker give me his laptop because he was able to connect to the internet with it, but unable to navigate to any pages, regardless of browser. I noticed this fool had AVG on his laptop, but thought nothing of it. I didnt think AVG would be the problem. I dug around, checked some stuff in the network settings, and saw no problems. I noticed whenever I tried to navigate to a site, though, it appeared to be redirecting/referencing a registry entry in the status bar.

sure enough, I sought out the registry entry, and it was an AVG entry. Deleted it, and browsing worked fine. Rebooted to make sure it was still good...browsing disabled again. Went into AVG, and turned it off completely. Still no luck. I had to uninstall this piece of shit in order to connect to the internet. FUCK AVG in the ass with big black steel dildo.
