VGA splitter cable to clone monitor image to TV - best option?

Has anybody used a VGA splitter before?

What I want to do is to use it to plug into the back of my PC, have one cable running upto the monitor and have the other cable leading downstairs to the big television. Both showing the exact same screen. (I have a USB extension cable too, as well as a second wireless mouse and USB speakers ready with the big TV.)

Up until recently I used the TV as a monitor for everything so that isn't a problem, works great just not very practical, so I was looking at ways to still use it for sports/movies, and have the monitor for general internet usage.

Initially, I bought this...
Splitter cable I have already bought and tried...

... Which didn't work. The original monitor just has a blurred screen. Of course, it's ridiculously cheap but as I wasn't sure which would be best, I thought just try the cheap one first. If it works, great, if not then I haven't wasted any expense.

Has anybody used a certain type for a similar thing as me that they can recommend?

I was checking on Amazon, and this Splitter box has great reviews and seems remarkably cheap...

Ratings are 5stars and very positive...

...But I'm not overly sure how that would work. A splitter cable would be ideal for me, cloning the screen. I don't want separate screens. I want it so my wife can be upstairs on google one moment, and then I will kick her off to watch a movie the next minute, with it just being as simple as getting the movie to play on the PC and then switching the downstairs tv to the PC channel. Everytime I've googled it people have just said that it's impossible to have separate screens using a splitter, but I only want to clone it.

Anybody any advice? I don't think I would need to provide specs or anything as it's just basically getting a splitter cable/splitter box that's well recommended, but if they would help give me a nudge.

Thanks to anybody that would help. My problems are taking over this section, but it's great, I've always received ample help where as googling I could never find the same exact problem, and for quick helps like this I require to be part of their forum which I'm not.

Cheers.

My solution is to use AppleTV. I have a mac and iphone and I can mirror the Mac etc on my tv in the lounge. Even streaming random tv shows online streams seemlessly to the tv. It's awesome!

Sorry I havent helped you one bit.

I just wanted to brag, lol.

Shit, what you're trying to do sounds best achieved by something like Apple TV like Clover suggested. I dont think a splitter would be ideal for this at all. I'm not even sure something like Dual Head 2 Go would help you, otherwise I'd suggest it.

Ahh I thought it was too good to be true. It seemed so simple, too simple, to do, haha.

alternatively, if you have an xbox 360, you could always stream all windows-compatible video formats through the xbox using windows media center.

If you have an xbox, lemme know and I can take you through that process :D

Ahh, no man, I've never really been a gamer so I don't have an Xbox 360.

The worst thing that happens is that i will have to swap the VGA cables if and when i use them. No problem really, I mean they would both be showing the same things anyway, just would have been completely easy the other way.

never mind, cheers lads!

the other thing is, I'm not sure I'm fully understanding the scope of what you're trying to accomplish here. If I could actually see what it was you're trying to do, I could probably offer a practical solution. I'm more of a hands-on person when it comes to finding solutions.

Sorry for being unable to help :(

No it's cool man, I truly appreciate any help.

I have my computer in the spare room. Up until recently it was connected through VGA to the wide screen tv downstairs, but it wasn't practical through space and for general Internet usage the screen was just too large, which was why I decided to move it to where it is now.

However, although it's been much easier and greater for Christmas shopping etc, we've now lost the ability to watch movies and sports on the big TV, which was why I wanted to connect it back up without moving the PC.

I wanted the PC itself to stay where it is in the spare room, and I bought a 20 foot VGA cable that I was hoping I could run invisibly down the stairs and hook it back up to the computer downstairs, thus using the downstairs TV as a monitor when we want to watch movies/sports. I have a wireless mouse/keyboard, spare speakers and 10 metre USB extension to use them both downstairs that are still connected to the computer upstairs.

I bought the VGA cable I linked to in my first post hoping I could use it and clone the images so the Monitor in the spare room and the large television on the wall downstairs would play both at the same time showing the exact same screen, which it does but just blurry.

I was hoping it was just the quality of Y shaped VGA splitter I used but it sounds like it's not, which is a shame. I can easily switch VGA cables from the 2 metre to the 20 metre one, but I will be using it nightly and I'm afraid changing them a few times a day will eventually lead to some sort of wear and tare and damage.

Thanks for your help again. I don't mind the situation I'm in, would just be great to have everything connected and hidden away and was absolutely easy to switch between the two. Le sigh.
