Default DVD Player/USB/JDownloader/mp4

So there's been this DVD player in the house for months, but now it's changed rooms and I get to mainly use it. It's a Sony DVP-SR320, and it has a really nifty feature that my technologically-challenged mind didn't know existed - it can play files off of a USB.

I hate watching stuff on a computer, so I rip stuff with JDownloader to burn to a re-writeable disc, then watch on a DVD player delete the files, burn new ones, rinse and repeat. But this USB thing seemed so much easier and quicker. I put 40-45 files on a USB which was around 7/9 GB (it's an 8GB USB), and went to play it on the DVD player.

It has a USB hole thingy (IDFK, port?) at the front. I shove it in there to play the files, but for all but one I got the message 'the current video format is not supported by this player'. I check the manual, and it says it plays mp4s. Every single file I had was mp4, yet all but one didn't work.

SOOOO I check other parts of the manual, and something catches my eye - "When playing visual data that is not supported by MPEG-4 format, only sound will heard'. That caught my eye because I do only hear sound on the files.

At this point I understand there are more than one types of mp4 files or something and I fuck around with the handbrake program. I put the file on there, go to 'video' and hit 'MP4(ffmpeg)' , then go to 'audio and hit 'AAC(ffmpeg)'. This worked. But doing this for dozens of files would be a fucking pain in the arse and I'm seriously not willing to do it. It takes a while and I may as well burn shit onto disc.

Still, if there's something I'm missing I'd like to know it. What exactly does 'not supported by mpeg-4 format' mean? Is there any way to download these with JDownloader instantly with this 'mpeg4 support' stuff? Why did none of the youtube, dailymotion, the torrent, or any other place not work yet this random vimeo one did? I played another torrent to test it out the first time and it played perfectly fine, but like nothing else will.

If the format is not supported by the Dvd player, it won't play on a disc either. There is no other way around this issue, you have to convert files to appropriate format.

Get any free Mp4v2 muxer program for easy and quick conversion.

They do play really well when I put it on disc, though. I guess converting this isn't too bad if I can do it in a batch. Giving Freemake a shot.

Any model of a Western Digital Media Player will do that for you.

Not only does it play any file off a USB but it can support a full Hard Drive attached to it. You can get a 2010 model for like $60. It has a codec for every video type including .MKV and has apps such as YouTube. I have one in every room in my house.

Oh and If you do get one, I definitely recommend HDMI hook up as opposed to the component cable that comes with it.

Sounds like you've got one just like mine. They only play XviD supported files so mainly .avi format. That's the biggest reason why I always uploaded files in .avi format back in the day. If you're ripping off YouTube then "YouTube Downloader HD" gives you the option to convert your rips into .avi format which will play on the USB through your DVD Player.

I was thinking about a new player, yeah. I might go look around tomorrow for the hell of it.

I'm some of converting to mp4 (even though they're already mp4) with freemake while clicking this MPEG-4 codec thingy, which has worked. Sort of same thing I was doing with handbrake, but I don't have to do them separately and can add them in a batch. I just have like 50 converting and it might take awhile, but that'll have to do.

Thanks to everyone for help who posted.
