“Cannot read from the source file or disk”

Anyone know how to fix/get around this error when I get it trying to move a file from a disc to my hard drive? I've been taking old discs with .AVI files on them, and converting them into real DVDs, but one file is giving me a lot of trouble, and keeps giving me this error message. Everything I've tried has given me no results. Tried making a .rar file and saving on my desktop, tried splitting the video and saving it to my desktop, tried to copy the disc as a whole, and tried converting the file to a different format with the output file saved on my desktop and got nothing. I've also gotten a message saying something about a cyclic redundancy check. Is this a lost cause?

If you've got a cyclic redundancy check then it's basically a bad burn on the disc. There's methods to "fix the problem" if you google it but none of them have ever worked for me. Basically there's an error on that part of the disc so you can't copy the file.

If the disc is functional itself and allows you to play the video that you want on the disc, you could do that and screen capture the video and save that as a file onto your system to work with. You would have to check to see if its playing all the way through as it could freeze up or crash during the video while it tries to access the bad section on the disc.

Re: “Cannot read from the source file or disk”

I've tried, but it doesn't work. Guess it's a lost cause. Oh well. It was only an IWA Mid South show, no big loss.

new problem though. I'm downloading every episode of the new NXT, and one episode (2012.07.11) won't play. It says it's a unrecognized file format, but it's an mp4, and all the others I have so far are mp4 and play fine. Won't open in a video converter, splitter, VirtualDub, VLC, Windows Movie Maker, or Windows Media Player. Anyone have solutions?

I ran the file through G-Spot and got this. Not sure what/if it has any relevance

Quote:
isom: MP4 Base Media v1 [IS0 14496-12:2003]
- iso2: MP4 Base Media v2 [ISO 14496-12:2005]
- avc1: MP4 Base w/ AVC ext [ISO 14496-12:2005]
- mp41: MP4 v1 [ISO 14496-1:ch13]
Also, upon running a working file through G-Spot, I noticed that the video column of the unplayable file is empty.
