Windows 8 - Your thoughts?

So I work as a tech support rep for a major computer company and now that Windows 8 has been officially released on all of our new notebooks, I'm troubleshooting a lot of issues with this new operating system and was just curious to see how others felt about it.

Have you installed it on your current computer? Have you recently purchased a new computer with Win8 preinstalled? How does it feel to you? Do you like the new "metro" start screen? Do the pros outweigh the cons in your opinion?

Myself personally, I have seriously mixed feeling about it. On one hand, I love some of the new features such as the faster boot time, the memory and cpu optimization, the refresh option, and the ability to easily combine several physical drives into one logical. But then on the other hand, it feels slightly awkward to me because of things that have been moved (or removed). The absence of a start menu button still throws me. The buried shutdown button is annoying. The "metro" app start screen really doesn't do much for me on non-touch devices.

What are your feelings on Windows 8?

TERRIBLE. Just way too much going on for me. Its better suited for a tablet not a desktop imo.

Haven't installed as it looks like complete dogshit. Will stick with 7 until something usable comes out. That's my feedback.

Like most people have said it looks good for tablets, but for desktops....I think I'll stick to 7. They tried to make it more streamlined, but I think it looks cluttered. Don't even get me started on horizontal scrolling.....

Installed it and then uninstalled it.

I mean I'm sure it's fine for some people but they focused on the aesthetics as opposed to the issues at hand.

There's too much going on. And I'm not willing to let go of my start menu for some shitty DVD Menu looking display.

People are never going to happy with whatever Microsoft does so they were doomed from the beginning but I don't like the system at all. You have to navigate and click your way through a shitload of stuff just to complete a simple task.

They need to go back and look at all the reasons XP was so wildly popular and is still referenced to this day.

I too work in IT Support and have been using Windows 8 corporately for the past 2 months. It took me a long time to get to grips with everything and get it to how I want it but ultimately that's the same with any operating system as an advanced user. I can imagine it works much better on a tablet but Metro is good, especially if you're a keyboard shortcut nerd like myself it makes life extremely easy.

The only hitches I have found is compatibility with older servers, namely Exchange 2010 from Windows 8 does not work well. Things like retention policies etc are simply not picked up. I've also had to sort some batch files for a couple of essential tools like Exchange management and SCCM, due to the fact that there's no client for Windows 8 yet I had to get (and presumably to force business to upgrade to Exchange 2013 and SCCM 2012).

All in all it's a very good OS, I don't see it overtaking Windows 7 in the business environment but I can see it creeping up there for home use.
