Does a laptop battery drain even when the laptop is off?

I know, sounds stupid, but I swear one day I charged it fully before I fell a sleep, and then unplugged it, but when I woke up, it was at 35 percent.

all batteries gradually lose charge whole a device is "off" Even when a battery is dicsonnected, it drains power. Albeit at a slow slow rate.

It shouldn't have drained 65 percent of it charge. Something must be wrong there. Perhaps it wasn't actually charging when you thought it was?

yeh, probably not. If you constantly keep a charger hooked up to the laptop while you're at home or whatever, though, it wreaks havoc on long-term battery life.

I've heard that before, Ziggler Mark and I wonder how much truth there was to that.

Maybe it's just starting to die? When mine was dying I saw a lot of weird moments when a fully charged battery would go to 20-30% in a matter of minutes. Literally like 10mins and it's almost empty.

A normal battery shouldn't drain more than 1-3% overnight.

Sure does. My new battery died in 12 months cause I was too lazy to take it out when at home and hooked up to charger.

Through bad habits (using a laptop like a desktop...) both of the laptops that i've owned have become unusable, unless connected to the mains, because of the battery degradation.

Fan since 2001

in my personal experience (family members who refuse to listen to me ), I've seen laptop batteries become useless alot sooner than they should.

Most recent example:

My uncle brought some new laptops home from work, and the kids used them basically for homework, and other light-duty uses, and left them plugged in round the clock. This went on for a year. I was at their house a couple of weeks ago and pulled the computer out to do some work at the kitchen table. I turned it on, and the battery died immediately. So I pulled out another one, and the system gives a fatal message about the health of the battery if it isnt plugged into a charger.

The theory is that a battery gets (x) amount of charge cycles in it's life. Ideally, you wanna use the entire charge amount (run the battery to 0%) before recharging, otherwise you're wasting charge cycles. So what you have is a battery that's never being unplugged, but unquestionably using battery and using charge cycles.

Yup, remember being told that. It's a fairly new comp, so I don't know how that happened. Sometimes I leave the charger in while on it, so I should let up. But lately I have been letting it run to 0 before charging it again. What did my last comp in was this universal charger I bought for it, thing fucking busted the battery and I wasn't able to use the comp unless plugged in.

Anyways, thanks for the help peeps, especially Ziggler Mark.

Re: Does a laptop battery drain even when the laptop is off?

Even when your computer is completely shut off, your battery goes into what is know as stand by mode.

Now, the degree of which you are describing it too extreme. In stand by, your battery would take days even to drain a small amount (4 or 5 percent.) Your battery obviously has something wrong, and likely needs to be replaced.

Some electronic shops can actually build you a new battery if you bring in your old one, it's essentially just replacing the cells.

Hope this helps.
