When you guys make these greatest athletes lists you always seem to forget the greatests ball players of all time, Mantle, Mays, DiMaggio and Williams.

The OP didn't mention them, but all 4 of those guys have been mentioned in this thread.

He's my all-time favorite player, someone i watched religiously growing up. I just ranked those as my personal preference i guess. I'm not a huge fan of basketball/boxing, so i never really watched much of Jordan or Ali besides from what i've seen on highlights n what not.

I wasn't disrespecting your opinion at all and hope you didn't take it that way. As I have stated, I'm not a big hockey fan. I'm just a statistics nut and looking at his stats versus Gretzky I was just curious.

Even if it were true, there is no way I could ever admit that anyone from the Red Sox holds that distinction. My objectivity does have limitations. It's funny how I love The Yankees and Celtics, but hate the Red Sox and Knicks

Lemieux is right up there with Orr, Maurice Richard and Howe no doubt. I'm pretty sure Mario's goals per game avg is better than Gretzey's. I think Wayne has him on assists and pts per game though.

Dominik Hasek is the best goalie ever IMHO.

Barry Sanders was the SHIT. A far, far more gifted athlete than someone like Jordan who was not able to reap the benefits of society's misplaced standards on athletic greatness because he got drafted by an incompetent team (that he still lead to the playoffs more years than not).

Of all the athletes I've ever had the pleasure to watch, Messi is the only other one I'd include in Barry's class. The guy could leave people slack-jawed on a 2-yard run with the way he bounced and weaved. A true artist.

^^

Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry could have been the two best ever at their positions if they even remotely had their heads screwed on straight.
