Re: Greatest Footballer of all Time Tournament: English Players Round

I'd love to have voted Ledley King as he's probably the best English centre back I got to see live. But Hoddle was special, one of the best footballers I have ever witnessed. I believe Ardiles once said that he was like Maradona but without pace and he would know, he played alongside both of them, what praise.

He does fit the criteria for being a great player for club and country. Not something too many English players can boast about.

Anyway, voted for Alan Shearer. His Newcastle peak days were class.
Fuck all compared to his days at Rovers. Absolutely dominant!

90% media creation. The Guardiola quote about Wilshere and the Barca reserves sums him up perfectly. Yes he was a good player who could provide deadly crosses and score wonderful free kicks. He was never close to being the player however that this country desperately wanted him to be.

This is true. Shearer's goal ratio at Blackburn was staggering, however the premiership had much more depth in talent during his Newcastle days.

Re: Greatest Footballer of all Time Tournament: English Players Round

Dixie Dean (may or may not be biased) for me.

32 goals in his debut season for Everton, fractured his skull at the end of the season in a motorbike incident before scoring 60 goals in the following season.

18 goals for England in 16 games, including 2 hat-tricks.

390 goals in 447 games.

Also, he was hard as fuck:
Quote:
Whilst at Tranmere, he was on the receiving end of a tough challenge which resulted in him losing a testicle in a reserve game against Altrincham. Immediately following the challenge, a teammate rubbed the area to ease the pain. Dean shouted "Don't rub 'em, count 'em!"
