Stanley Cup vs World Cup
Me and a friend recently got into a...discussion...about which was the bigger event: the Stanley Cup or the World Cup.
Being a diehard hockey fan, he claimed that nothing comes close to the emotion and phyiscal performance in the stanley cup and that no other play offs and championship means more to a player than it.
As for me, I'm not a die hard fan of either sport but I think that the WORLD cup has more emotion and more meaning to it than a league. Whenever the world cup is going on, EVERYONE is talking about it and in some countries, its the only thing to look forward to. I would also bet that more countries around the world follow soccer more than hockey.
So which would you say is the bigger event? Not just in terms of size, but emotions, meaning, etc.

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
The argument of it meaning more to the players is kinda pointless. Obviously it means a lot to the players that play their respective sport. It means a lot to the fans of the respective sports.
As for which is bigger? There is no question it's the World Cup. I'd imagine the World Cup dwarfs the Stanley Cup like the Sun dwarfs the Earth.

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
Without a doubt it is the World Cup. The World Cup is the world's most widely viewed sporting event. I think something like 700 Million people watched the World Cup the last time.

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
meaning and worth is subjective as the stanley cup means nothign to me as its very difficult to watch ice hockey in england. the sport isnt big worldwide so id imagine its viewing figures outside of america are tiny at best. Not every country plays hockey so there is no worldwide appeal.
The world cup on the other hand happens once every 4 years so the the whole world is watching when it takes place. the final alone will get around 380m viewers but ask wayne gretsky if he cares about the world cup final he'd probably struggle to tell you when the world cup is.

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
World Cup by far, doesn't RAW get higher ratings than the Stanley Cup did? It's a joke to compare them in terms of which is "bigger", and it's also a joke to compare them to emotion. Players are playing for their Country, not just their city like hockey. Of course Hockey is more physical, but what kind of reasoning is that to say it's better?

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
Hell. Even 24 million watched the final in the U.S. NHL wishes it could pull in 24 million for the series.
Anyway, it's apples to oranges. Club vs International. Not a fair comparison.

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
Unfair comparison.
You need to compare the Stanley Cup to something like the F.A Cup of English football, IMO.
Even then I imagine the F.A Cup is bigger due to the World wide appeal.

Re: Stanley Cup vs World Cup
World cup is gigantic compared to the Stanley Cup
In terms of how difficult it is to win it is a much closer comparison.
