Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

Some coworkers were talking about the football game last night between the Vikings and Packers, using pronouns as if they were actually on the team.

I freaking hate when people do this. But please, if you do talk like that about your sports team, can you explain to me why?

Because as fans we invest/commit/whatever ourselves financially and emotionally into that team and care about it. Players come and go, but the fans are always there every week We celebrate the highs and suffer the lows.

Although some of suffer more than others

If you don't already know, then you'll never understand.

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

that's a pet peeve of mine. when i see people doing that, respect automatically goes down. they feel like since they've invested so much time being a fan, they're part of the team. they're not actually on the team though, you'll never find your name on the roster, even if you're the dude at the jets game chanting j-e-t-s. now for the person like that, saying we is acceptable(though i still smirk), since his leading the cheer might actually help inspire the team(doubtful), but for anyone else who isn't a season ticket holder cheering like a buffoon on every play, u can't say we.

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

Well, when it's team games, you say We to include yourself, your team and your fellow supporters, which makes sense. The team I support as well is MY team, because I support them and that support belongs to me.

I wouldn't really know how to do it any other way to be honest. I support Everton football club, so I use We to describe anything to do with them a lot of the time, but anything individually such as singling players out to say that He or They had a good game is just the norm.

Seems a petty thing to get annoyed about to be honest. What do say, OP?

If you're a fan of Roger Federer it's harder to say We, but that's because it's just one guy. If it was that way in a team sport, you would have to use the team name over and over and people would get sick of it.
