Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

Its simple. No fans = no team . Fans are the ones PAYING the players and if theres no fans at the games to rally the players on then that team would lose more than they should. Great fans are what keep teams going. Lets also not forget in soccer, fans are actually PAID members of the team that they support actually being part of the team. They don't have those things in North America but still. Players thrive on our passion for the game, not for us players wont care nearly as much and would just treat it like any other ordinary job pretty much, they'd just coast it. Fans feel the losses and enjoy the wins as much as the players. It gives people joy, something to get behind

When people complain about sports fans using"we" is just nonsense. Saying that they don't "need" us when its complete bullshit. Players need us as much as we need them.Like I said, if there are no fans then there are no teams and no teams means no league and no league means no organized professional sports. How often do you hear pro athletes say they'd be nothing with out fans?

You wanna tell me that fans can't say "we"?

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

The reason's extremely obvious dude. I'll provide an example too.

Most fans of teams are a fan of the team that is located in their city, or very near it. When you refer to your city or your country, how do you do it? "the United States this, the city of whatever that", or, "'we' don't like that stuff here"?

The team's part of the city, you're part of the city, therefore it's "we". Or better yet, if you buy a ticket, buy a jersey or any kind of merchandise, you're helping pay put the team on the floor. It's your team. Again, "we".

I don't think bandwagoners deserve the right to use the term though.

I'm a WE guy but I'm also a die hard fan who might smack the shit out of you if we suffer a horrendous loss and you're in my face.

I agree with that. College works that way also. For example...I'm a grad of Northern Iowa. If the Panthers are playing football, basketball...I am allowed to use the term "we" when referring to the team. I shouldn't do that if rooting for Iowa or the Bears, seeing as how I never played for them, I can't.

I try not to say "we" or "us" because it is pretty stupid but every now and then I get caught out when others are referring to Arsenal as "you lot"

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

I'm with OP, tbh, I've always found this irritating on the level of the weird people who went to pep rallies in high school, and the class of 1970 people who started a high school v. high school rivalry chant AT MY FATHER'S FUNERAL.

Well no, that last one was clearly far more annoying. But same category of douchebag.
