Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

because i buy merchandise, and spend on my time on these teams.

thus, they are apart of me. never understood why it bothers people.

shutupchico, thats kinda illogical. who actually thinks they're apart of the team? that's a silly reason to be annoyed, tbh. i dont go onto espn.com and expect to see my name on the roster...come on man.

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

I really can't think of a good way to explain it, that's just the way it is.

The film comparison doesn't work because if you are about to watch Raiders, there is nobody who is going into the film supporting either side. It's not like one person watching has been an avid supporter of Indiana Jones for the past 20 years and is standing in the pub next to another guy who is an equally avid supporter of the Nazis. Any allegiances are formed during the film and not beforehand, meaning there is less emotion involved and opinions are less partisan.

Take it down to high school. IF you go to the school, are an alumni or parent/family watching you will refer to the team as "our team" or "we". There will always be bandwagon fans, but imagine somebody being a Packers fan like 40 years, this person has probably spent half of their life cheering one team, they get attached so they feel part of the team

The players play for the fans and it is the fans team.

I've got an Everton tattoo so I consider them a part of me completely, along with just being my team.

So it's us.

I freaking hate when people do this. But please, if you do talk like that about your sports team, can you explain to me why?
And I hate when people do what you do. It's pointless nitpicking.

Fan likes sports team, fan supports sports team for a long time, fan feels connection with sports team and uses ''we'' and ''us'' when discussing sports team. It doesn't mean that they feel as though they're a player.

Fans are just as much part of a team as their team, without them they don't even have a job.

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

Becuase we feel a connection unlike anything else in entertainment to our sports teams. I mean when a tv show or movie series goes downhill then you can stop watching it and not be frowned upon. but if you ditch your team then it's really frowned upon, almost like ditching a friend or family member.

Re: Why do people use "we" and "us" referring to sports teams?

without fans, clubs dont work. fans are the quintessential part of sport. with no fans, the team is useless. so i refer to it as we, because as a fan, i am vital to a sporting organization's existence. if you don't feel that special bond with the team(s) you support, then sport is just meaningless.
