How does the AFL work?

I was hoping to get into Australian Football but I wanted to know how the structure works. I looked at Wikipedia but that didn't really explain it clearly so I came here to ask you guys that are fans of the AFL. I get the basic rules of the game, i.e. the scoring, rules etc. But I'm a little confused at the season structure, is it like football where each team plays each other home and away, or do each team play a specific group of teams? And how are the finals determined at the end of it, is it just 1st vs. 2nd in a final?

Re: How does the AFL work?

23 rounds, 1 bye per team, a draw is made up beforehand, it's impossible for all 18 teams to play each other home and away. top 8 teams at the end of the season go into the finals. 4 weeks of finals.
